I've thought for a while that the infection isn't real - notice that at first when Rousseau mentions it she says her team died of it, then later it is that "They got sick" and she had to kill them - I've wondered for a while if perhaps the sickness as she refers to it is simply that they considered joining the Others, which she couldn't understand as they took her baby, or that they wanted to try to get off the island, again she couldn't do this as she couldn't leave Alex behind, and maybe they thought she was going crazy and tried to make her do whichever it was they wanted to do and this made her snap and kill them. She's had plenty of time alone to justify it since.

The other people who have referrred to the infection/disease are also suspicious - Kelvin clearly didn't believe in any as he took his suit off, and Ethan said they didn't have enough of the serum or whatever for Claire and her baby so she'd have to leave, but while we have seen the others take blood - from Michael, Kate, Jack and Sawyer - we have not seen them injecting themselves, and if they needed the vaccine serum then surely they would have taken what was dropped from a plane (or planted there by them for whatever reason as I'm sure someone woudl have heard a plane) - they could have taken it by force, and they knew I'm sure that Desmond had some so they could have taken that, so why say to Claire that they didn't have enough for her or the baby if not to manipulate her - maybe they hoped that it would make her come back if she did try to aescape, but by the time she did it was too late and they'd moved on

Ben did not seem to be too concerned about getting a disease while he was held in the hatch - which was by then not sealed off from the outside in any way. Surely if it had been a primary concern he would have escaped when he had the chance - he clearly saw that manipulating Locke into believing he was trustworthy was far more important.

I'm not sure it exists at all, it is probably just something made up by Dharma and the sickness Danielle spoke of is different, just the workings of her own imagination.

Any thoughts?

that is a really good theory i agree with the whole idea regarding ben appearing to not worry about the disease but more interested in manipulating locke because if there was a disease i'm sure he would be more worried about that as you said april_rose Very Happy ace theory! Very Happy

thank you Smile
I'll try to come up with more over the weekend after seeing Further Instructions, everything is so mad at the moment it's hard, as soon as I get an idea the next episode shoots it out of the water.

I completely agree. Earlier the clips in the hatch mentioned how there were psychological studies going on (among other things) on the island. I've thought from the start that the disease was something made up to see how the people would act.. or maybe it was a mental illness? One man in the hatch before Desmond arrived killed himself and that wasn't the only hatch. Think it's possible?

Perhaps it was a disease from the 80s when the Dharma initiative started, they didn't know whether or not it was infectious or if it was infectious how it was transmitted. Or maybe it was a cure for the Medusa spider bites.
