What are you reading right now?

At the moment I'm reading "The Dud Avocado" by Elaine Dundy, it's from the 1950's about a young American woman who goes off to Paris in search of life, love and adventure, it's amazing how current the themes are really! Makes me view the 50's in an all new light! Very easy to read as well, I'm really enjoying it!

Nothing! So bad. Sad I used to never be not reading (you see how good with words I am?!) but now I haven't read anything in ages! I've got three books sitting on my shelf that I haven't read yet!!
April_Rose

I've got millions (well not literally millions, but well over a hundred) books upstairs that I haven't read yet, my mum had a clearout before she moved and I think I was actually a bit intimidated/overwhelmed by the sheer amount of them and hardly read anything for ages! Just picked this one up the other day to read while sitting out in the sun and am enjoying it so far anyway.
Em_J

At least I haven't got that many! I started This Forsaken Earth by Paul Kearney but got bored and haven't read anything since! I hate not being able to finish a book, think that's why I've not started on anything else.

I've got The Lies of Locke Lamorra sat on my shelf, that looks really good and Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, which I fancy is gonna be a bit trippy so might start reading that actually.

I'm reading Engelby by Sebastian Faulkes, it's about this really strange bloke who may or may not be a serial killer.

I'm getting major writing jealousy from reading it because it's so clever. Most of it's in the first person , the Engelby character telling the reader what he's doing and occasionally why he's doing it. But there's also little snatches of other things ,like another character's diary entry which tells the story in a completely different way. So I'm wondering now whether the Engelby character's a compulsive liar, or just a total loon... i reckon both...
April_Rose

Wow, sounds good! I know what you mean about writing envy....I haven't read any Sebastian Faulkes but I've heard he's good.
redwinegoblin

He is really good - I love Birdsong, its pretty heavy going, but it's a really good read.

I'm not technically reading anything right now, but am going to start Raven's Gate by Anthony Horowitz because my friend read it and she said it was really good, and she never reads
angelfairy

At the moment i'm reading "Goodbye To All That" by Robert Graves its about his time in WW1
its pretty heavy going but its good so far
redwinegoblin

I've just started reading "The last witchfinder" by James Morrow. it's pretty stodgy so far, plus it's narrated by a book...which is getting on my nerves already. But a few people have told me it gets really good so I'm gonna stick with it determindly!!
April_Rose

Sounds interesting! Strange, but interesting

I'm reading "Bluebeard's egg" - a collection of short stories by Margaret Atwood.
Em_J

Just started reading Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, very weird at the mo. . . not entirely sure what's going on, but tis funny!
April_Rose

Was in my bro's house today before I went to work (it's in the same town as where I had a class, I don't call up to him often enough!) and he loaned me two books - The Kalahari Typing school for Men by Alexander McCall Smith, and Midnight's children by Salman Rushdie. Not sure yet which I'm going to read first, depends whether I'm in the mood for literature or a little light relief I think, from what I know of them!
angelfairy

I've just started reading a book called "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer after someone recommended it to me. Its good so far and i can see it developing into a really great read.
April_Rose

Mostly reading sociology and psychology textbooks at the moment, but a friend loaned me "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell" by Susanna Clarke (I think) so I've just started reading it. It's a big massive tome of a book, seven-hundred plus pages, full of detail and seems really well researched, has held my interest so far. It's about magicians in nineteenth-century england; sort of like an alternate history of the time.
redwinegoblin

^^I've got that one, but i started it and lost interest pretty quickly! My tiny attention span means I have to be riveted right from the start!
April_Rose

I'm usually like that as well - I tried several times to read Catch 22 and could never get into it, though people tell me it's brilliant. Am only able to read a few pages at a time anyway at the moment though so it's working for me so far. Written very much like an older book, like it was written in the time it's set in, which is strange.

I'm reading northern lights again before the film comes out
Em_J

I just leant that to a mate but she's not read it yet.

I'm reading The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, tis ok so far. It's about a thief and not sure what else, I've only read one chapter so far.
April_Rose

I've left aside the big book for now, reading an anthology of short stories by Irish writers that I got last night, they're having a competition for a new one so I want to get a look at the standard& style! Laughing
Jenny*

reading northern lights AGAIN, and i cried AGAIN! i think it's worse because i know whats going to happen at the end of the 3rd one ...
Em_J

That reminds me, I still haven't got that back from my mate yet!
redwinegoblin

I still need to read those books...keep meaning to buy them and then forgetting!
Jenny*

i need a good book to read ... any ones to recommend??
Em_J

You gotta read 'em, RWG, they're good!

Yeah Jen, try the Bartimaeus Trilogy!!
Jenny*

oh yeah i remember you mentioning them before! i will search for them!
redwinegoblin

I've just started reading Northern Lights... not gripped so far but I'm only a couple of chapters in so I'll give it a bit longer!
Em_J

I think it took me a while to get into it. Tis good though!
Jenny*

keeeeep reading!!! Razz
redwinegoblin

I'll stick with it - I can read it on the plane this weekend, no other distractions!
angelfairy

i just finished a book called Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill.
Fantastic read, i'd recommend it to anyone.
April_Rose

I've never heard of it, what's it about? (Makes me think of the Nirvana song....)
angelfairy

lol i was reminded of the song too when i first started it. I'll type out the blurb on the back as i'm useless at explaining hahaha.

"When Judas Coyne heard someone was selling a ghost on the internet, there was no question. It was perfect for his collection of macabre: the cannibal's cookbook, the witch's confession, the authentic snuff movie. As an ageing death metal rock god, buying a poltergeist almost qualifies as a buisness expense.

Besides Jude thinks he knows all about ghosts. Jude has been haunted for years...by the spirits of bandmates dead and gone, the spectre of his abusive father he fled as a child, and the memory of the suicidal girl he abandoned. But this ghost, delivered to his doorstep in a black heart shaped box, is different. It makes the house feel cold. It makes the dogs bark. And it means to chase Jude from his home and make him run for his life..."

its not a book to everyones taste, but i really liked it. If you like scary book then you will probably like this one.
April_Rose

I'm not generally into horror but I like the idea of buying a ghost on the internet! Laughing
angelfairy

haha that's what attracted me to the book in the first place Smile
redwinegoblin

Ooh, that sounds good! I love scary stories...
Jenny*

reading the seventh harry potter again
angelfairy

Almost finished reading 'Eclipse' By Stephenie Meyer.
Jenny*

angelfairy

Jenny*
