The Man Behind the Curtain - Discussion threadDiscuss
S03E20 - The man behind the Curtain - here!
What did you think of the flashbacks? Did you enjoy the episode overall? Were you surprised by any of the events?

I was so surprised by the whole episode and I'm going to have to watch it again because I didn't understand any of it.
It was so irritating at times but I enjoyed the flashbacks. Why the hell does Jack continue to look a saint in everything he does?

ben had a wild little birthday didn't he??? what a messed up childhood!! is the gas the reason behind the inability to carry a child to term?
how old are natives?....the hostiles... whatever.... and where did they come from?
locke was so strong... but still managed to fall for ben's ruse...
jacob.... is he stuck between portals of time? does ben have the ability to squeeze in there and hear him? or is ben just a major loon with telekenetic powers and the ability to throw his voice??? can locke's connection with the island enable him to hear jacob?
kate is really struggling with what to do... they need to get her back to being the strong kate the leader kate... and stop all this relationship humbug! .. or just let her die....
jack di come out smelling like a rose didn't he!? what will be his plan and is that why rousseau got the dynamite??
love this show~~~!!

Hate Jack so very much! The man makes me so mad!!! And Locke irritates the hell outta me too!! I am liking Ben though! Loved the cabin stuff, well cool. And the Roger Work Man stuff cracked me up, as did the bunny stuff.
I actually really liked this ep. Very clever.

bagels, don't feel bad. many people had a difficult time with this epi... written by elizabeth sarnoff and drew goddard... elizabeth usually writes the women's epis but this one was just...unearthly! i wish i had tivo or the ability to tape it or even download it for a second, third and fourth look at it... this is one that needs multiple viewings...
and it still makes me tremble!
i keep checking the screen caps and other boards and pipck and chose what this whole thing meant.. i sttill haven't recuperated and am dazed...

I enjoyed it in general, and was really confused (in a good way) by the end, here are my main thoughts...
Beach scene - why did they bother, there was so little of it they should have just left it for next week as it didn't resolve anything. What I did see annoyed me though - Jack saying he had decided what to do - surely in that situation no one could see it as being his call - Jin's maybe as it was his wife who was about to be kidnapped, but not Jack. Kate was feisty with Sayid but shut up as soon as Jack came on the scene...god I hope she hits Jack soon.
Plenty of questions raised regards the age thing - I actually think Richard is pretty good looking now! How people don't seem to age when they reach 30 or so, and yet children do grow up, and we saw an old woman among the Others before (Amelia I think, at the book club) and it doesn't seem to change when they go into the outside world as Richard was there as recently as 3 years ago when he recruited Juliet.
Good to learn more about Dharma, and that Ben was not in fact born on the island, liked that Roger Workman was Ben's father, and the father blaming him for killing hi9s mother explains him a bit better. Interesting how he met Richard and presumably was recruited by them as he got closer to them, very interesting that he ended up being respected so much he took charge, but I wonder if Richard or more perhaps could change their mind on that, especially considering the impact Locke has had.
Nice to see Mikhail get the crap beat out of him, and him being alive having a very simple explanation in the end.
Then there's Jacob...I thought it might be Ben to begin with, until Ben shot Locke, though I don't think it will be fatal. I wonder what the story was with the line around the cabin, and why the flashlight sent Jacob wild, and why he said "help me" - could it be that he is a prisoner of some sort? I also wondered at one stage whether Jacob could be the smoke monster, or connected to it in some way.
Ben is certainly threatened by Locke, I wonder how he will get out of that, and when he does what the effect will be on Ben. I liked the fact Alex gave Locke the gun too, considering the relationship he had with his own father, it's interesting that their own relationship is so strained (whether he's Alex's real father or not)
Plenty of issues to be resolved in the final few episodes.

i keep wondering if that gas has anything to do with the inability of women to carry a child to term... if it causes internal bleeding like that...are pregnant women more suseptible to the lingering effects? has it somehow mutated thru time to become 'the sickness'???
which again makes me wonder how much of danielle's crew...if there was one... were women....

I didn't relate the gas the and the child-bearing ability...The people who were gassed were Dharma and all the "Others" had masks on as far as I could see, maybe long term there is a residual effect but what about women who have just come to the island, why would it effect them if they haven#t been exposed to it over a long period?

Anyone else find it weird that Richard had hardly aged between Ben being a little boy and then him being a grown man?
|
April_Rose
|
Yeah, that was a big thing for me, one of the big questions about "The Island" itself rather than all the weird stuff that goes on on it - Ben referred to the people who were already there as natives, but they speak in modern accents and regards Richard anyway are perfectly capable in the outside world, so how is it that that children grow up but once people hit 30 ish they don't seem to age?
They can't be descendants of the slave ship or they would have been left behind modern society, but at the same time, have any of their women (before the purge) managed to have children?
Am I right in thinking there was reference to one of the boards having baby boars? If so why can animals reproduce but not humans?
|
lockeslady
|
the question of why animals can reproduce but not humans has been brought up and there has been no answers to that... perhaps a good question for the podcasts???
jack thinks he can do in the others for good?? i can see now why you think he is arrogant!!! is there really no way for everyone to live together? ops! forgot the die alone... which brings me back to locke who is alone... please... no die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
April_Rose
|
Yes! A convert...
The animals thing is a big one, particularly as there are mammals on the island which reproduce in the same way as human women, hopefully it will be answered!

what happened to amy? i was hoping we would see her grown up

Yeah that's a big question, Ben was holding the doll she gave him before he killed his father, I'd like to think that he saved her but maybe not...
::edit::
Watching it again now on TV, when Richard asks Ben what he's got there at the start, Ben says "It's a birthday present, mine just happens to be today. You do remember birthdays don't you Richard?" And Richard just smiles.
Just thought that was interesting! Another reference to Richard not ageing perhaps.
