The Kingdom of Malinas by me!

I've not got round to sorting out an ISBN yet so it's only available from Lulu at the moment. Very Happy

redwinegoblin

Cool! How exciting. I'll be ordering one Wink
Em_J

Yay, ta! It's very exciting!
April_Rose

Brilliant! Very Happy
Em_J

So excited about this at the mo, just been up my grandparents showing it off. Come back and look on myspace and Khop (watchlost) had posted a bulletin advertising it!! How nice is that?! Sometimes I totally love people. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
redwinegoblin

That's really nice of him! I saw the bulletin on myspace, thought it was cool!
April_Rose

Oh yeah, I must do that too! Meant to but I'm just catching up online now...(caught up here earlier on first! Laughing )

great that you're so excited about it and it's all going well! Very Happy
redwinegoblin

I'd do that too but I have only about 10 friends on myspace Laughing
Em_J

Ta AR!!! No worries, RWG! Laughing
April_Rose

No problemo! Very Happy bulletin posted! Wink
Em_J

Yay! Ta muchly.
April_Rose

No bother, that's what online networking is all about! Very Happy
redwinegoblin

Just ordered my copy! It's gonna take about 3wks though by the looks of it!
Em_J

Have you?! Cool!! Reckon you're probably the first person. Laughing Yeah mine took a while to come, it comes from America or Canada I think.
redwinegoblin

Yeah, they said it'd take 10-15 days to manufacture, then a week for postage. Didn't realise it was available for download too!
Em_J

Yeah, well it wasn't, but nobody was buying it and I thought maybe that was because it was too expensive. So I made it available for download as a cheaper option. Even though I hate ebooks.
redwinegoblin

Yeah I'm not a great fan of ebooks either, I can't read loads of stuff on a screen, it kinda defeats the object of having a book in the first place!
Em_J

Yeah. Didn't want to do it as an ebook, just cos the cover looks ace and I want everybody to see it! Laughing

Just looking at my stats now... units sold since 14th April... 1. That's you! Laughing Ta. Very Happy I'm really not very good at the whole marketing thing... I've had plenty of people congratulate me and say it looks really good and that, but nobody actually seems to want to buy it!
redwinegoblin

Heh heh, cool! I'm the first Laughing

Maybe it's a slow builder, I guess lots of people will look and be curious - maybe you'll get more sales in the summer holidays and coming up to Christmas.

Are you going to see if you can get it sold in shops locally and stuff?
Em_J

Yeah I need to sort out the ISBN first. Which I can do easily enough, but I've not done it yet cos I think I read somewhere that once that was done, if you made any alterations to the book you'd have to pay god knows how much for a new copy or something or other.
redwinegoblin

Blimey....it's complex! Laughing I might need some advice when I finally get around to self-publishing my poetry!
Em_J

Yeah that'd be cool, you should do it! Tis free after all. All I've paid is £11 something for the copy so I could see what it looked like! I love doing it, I'm looking around for other stuff I can publish! Laughing Even if nobody buys it!
redwinegoblin

I never really thought of self publishing up until recently! Although I think I'd be a bit wierded about loads of other people reading my poems - it's different when its on writeright and stuff, but if its a book then people from my office or something might read them, argh!
Em_J

Yeah but all your stuff's good so you shouldn't worry! Though I was looking at something I'd written and was wondering whether to make a book of short pieces... then I wasn't sure if I'd like people I know reading it! Laughing
redwinegoblin

Thanks! It's easier showing people fictional stuff I find, showing them anything that has anything to do with my feelings makes me want to curl up into a little ball and cringe Laughing
Em_J

Yeah me too. I avoid all that stuff! At least I don't do poetry so it's ok.
redwinegoblin

Maybe I'll write under a pen-name...

Joanna Le Redwinegoblin perhaps Laughing
Em_J

Heh heh! You so should!
April_Rose

Cool pen name RWG! Laughing

Is ISBN that complicated? I thought you could buy 6 of them for about $75....I don't think you can just buy one, though if you go through the publishing company they probably by them in bulk so you could through them - might be better to do it yourself if it is still that price and then if you did make changes you'd have spares....
Em_J

Yeah you can't buy just one. It's £59 to get it from Lulu so I'll just do that. I did look elsewhere and it looked quite expensive.
redwinegoblin

I have no idea what ISBN is! Laughing Someone enlighten me, I feel like a doofus!
Em_J

International standard book number. So it can be sold in shops and whatnot.
redwinegoblin

Ah right, so you don't need one of them to publish online but you need one for the shops?
Em_J

You don't need one to sell it from Lulu marketplace which is mine at the mo, but you'll need it for shops and Amazon and libraries and all that sort of stuff. Because the selling price changes and that I think. The number identifies the book, the publisher and the version I think... Could be wrong!
redwinegoblin

Yikes...complex  Confused I'll have to read up on all that before i get all my stuff sorted...so much reading!
Em_J

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Standard_Book_Number

It's not too bad, I'm probably making it sound more complicated than it is. Lulu sorts it all out anyway. It's cos I've got a one piece cover that means I'm gonna have to generate the barcode myself and add it to the cover.
redwinegoblin

Shocked Have you seen the maths on that wiki explanation?! Laughing Nearly made my brain explode!! Glad the publisher sorts it out....
Em_J

Yeah I ignored that bit! Laughing All you have to do with Lulu is say you want to buy a distribution package. Then they'll assign you your ISBN and depending on what type of book cover you have, they'll put it on your book for you.
Em_J

Paperback version now available: http://www.trafford.com/06-0732

Though the hardback version is better and they're both about the same price. The paperback version is available online pretty much anywhere now!

UPDATE
Now for sale on ebay for £2!! Bargain eh? Wink (I'm also selling some other stuff on ebay, so have a look!)

April_Rose

Cool Em! I still haven't got it either but maybe now I have some work on again I'll have some cash again!
Em_J

Posted yours today, AR. The lady in the post office said 'don't they have lovely addresses over there' Laughing
April_Rose

Laughing It does sound lovely...thanks! Can't wait to get it!
April_Rose

Finished your book last night Em! i started reading when I turned off the computer, thinking it would just be for a little while - stayed up reading till 12.30am when I finished it! it's a great story! gets really exciting, love the Mariko character, Millicent reminds me of Izzy a bit Laughing Sorrel is great, non of the traditional heroine stuff, I like the way she's grumpy a lot, funny to see Saoirse in there too as that's a pretty common name here! The dragon stuff is great too, really imaginative - I loved it! Well done! Very Happy
Em_J

Yay! Thank you! Can't believe you've finished it already!! Laughing Mariko's my fave so I'm glad you like her! My stepmum said she liked her too. Yeah I realise now that Millicent and Izzy are similar, but Millicent came first so maybe Izzy's like Millicent rather than the other way around! Although Millicent's not nice at all, whereas Izzy can be. (Sometimes!) Laughing Sorrel is so me when I was 16!! She goes dark in the second book, loses the plot a bit cos something happens... Yeah I love the name Saoirse! I just like the way it looks and how nobody knows how to pronounce it (unless you're Irish!). I hope I put it right in the pronunciation guide! I realise that all my male characters are a bit dull in the first one, hopefully I've got some more interesting male characters in the second and third books.
April_Rose

Yeah, I realised after I posted that it was probably more Izzy being like Millicent! Laughing Can't wait for the next one now, looking forward to seeing what happens to Sorrel! yep, it's right in the pronunciation guide from what I remember - I'd have noticed if it was wrong! Yeah Mariko is definitely cool, I love her attitude! Suppose you were so young when you wrote it first, it's hard to develp male characters at that age as you don't know so much about men yet (well, not that I feel I know much about them now, and I'm married! Laughing ) - don't think they're dull though. the women are so good, there just isn't much left for them to do! Laughing
Em_J

I know the women are all kick ass! Laughing Apart from Helena, who's whiny and sucks! Laughing So glad you liked it though!
April_Rose

Laughing Helena's noble I suppose, rather than whiny! Yeah I loved it!
Em_J

I can't stand her, she's gutless! Laughing I'm in the mood to work on the second book again now! I've two new male characters in the second book who are hopefully interesting! Although maybe one of them not so much til the third cos he goes a bit loopers... And one of them is like Alex in that he doesn't shut up and he talks bollocks. Laughing
April_Rose

Laughing Cool, yeah do some work on it, I want to read it! Laughing
Em_J

I might do some work on it later now! Very Happy I'm off for a bit as bro wants a game on the xbox. Will be back after!
April_Rose

laters!
Em_J

Check it:

Sorrel by *Greykitty on deviantART

I love DeviantArt! This cost me $5!! Weirdly, artists seem to like giving her red hair, even though I always say dark! Laughing I kinda like her with red hair. I commissioned three pics to go on my website. Will put this one on in a bit. I'm also having Gaeshi and Millicent done.

Edit: On the site: http://www.the-kingdom-of-malinas.co.uk/index.htm
redwinegoblin

That is so cool! $5?! Bargain...
Em_J

Yeah major bargain!!
April_Rose

Looks good!
Em_J

New review! Very Happy

http://www.readbetweenlines.co.uk/reviews.html
redwinegoblin

Cool! That's a really good review!
Em_J

She sent me a really nice email too, so that's cool! I don't know who Tamora Pierce is though or the other guy! Laughing
redwinegoblin

I think I've heard of Tamora Pierce, the name rings a bell...
Em_J

I'm gonna look her up.

She gave me a link to put on my facebook page but cos I'm a doofus I don't really know how it works! Laughing
Em_J

This is another review I just got, which I thought was cool as it's by a 14yr old boy!

The Kingdom of Malinas is an interesting book. The cover is a good, intriguing start that makes the book look really quite different. In the story the main character, Sorrel, is sixteen but she felt younger as I read the book. She has a sidekick, Little Cloud, who hates being called "little" a very good and realistic touch.

The main theme of the plot is her and her friends rescuing their race from slavery by the Lamya, another tribe. There is a really good sub-plot in this, as the ruler of the Lamya is a cruel killer who rules his top men and women with threats and has fought his way from street urchin to the top. Some of his advisors do not like this and wish to kill him because of it.

There are some lovely twists to the norm for this kind of theme that make this book really worthwhile and I found myself not wanting to put it down. For example, when I thought I knew what would happen next, like they would go off and rescue everyone in the morning, something happened during the night and they found themselves better off in the long-run but having to wait another week, in which lots more events would take place.

I have only minor quibbles with the book. The narration jumps from impersonal to personal. An example of this is "Oh yes, Zev was back!" which is fine when a character is speaking but roughens the flow of the passage. The plot drops you in at the deep end, an exiting and gripping technique but would have benefited from more filling in later on. I assumed it was fairly long ago, with American-Indian style tribes.

The great thing about this book is how it starts with the common theme of the hero rescuing their kind but gives it many unique twists. A great book for boys, and girls as well, because the main character is a girl. I would say it would be ideal for the 10-15 age group but older and younger people may enjoy it too. All in all, a really good book and well worth reading.
redwinegoblin

Cool!
April_Rose

Nice one Em! Very Happy
Em_J

Ta! They're doing an interview with me too, making it into a feature!
April_Rose

woo, brilliant!
Em_J

Tis up already! http://www.readbetweenlines.co.uk/
Em_J

Check out my website, new character art! Very Happy
April_Rose

Cool! Millicent kind of looks like a blond Izzy! Laughing
Em_J

That's what I though! Laughing Millicent came first so technically Izzy's a brunette Millicent.
April_Rose

Yeah I remember you saying that before!
Em_J

Did you see Gaeshi on there too? Added him today.
April_Rose

Yeah he looks good too, slightly older looking than I imagined him somehow...
redwinegoblin

They're cool! Millicent is definately a lot like how I imagine Izzy, but blonde Laughing
Em_J

Yeah he does look older.

I'm gonna try and make Millicent different to Izzy in the second book! Laughing
April_Rose

Laughing Well as you said, Millicent was written first!
Em_J

Izzy's way more developed than Millicent though, that's the trouble. Confused
April_Rose

Yeah, but you probably have a sense of what Millicent was supposed to be? Before Izzy came along.
Em_J

Yeah, very similar to Izzy! Laughing I think Izzy's a more complicated person than Millicent. Millicent's actually evil, where Izzy's a bit more... I dunno, good?!
April_Rose

Izzy does care about people I suppose, she just thinks that she knows wht's best for everyone and that they should listen to her...
Em_J

Yeah! Laughing She thinks she's doing everything for the good of others... apart from when she knows she's not!
April_Rose

Laughing She's sort of evil...but maybe not in as clear cut a way as Millicent!
Em_J

Yeah. Cool, that'll help me differentiate the two I reckon! Should really work on the second book.
April_Rose

Yeah after all the stories and poems and flash pieces a book seems a hell of a challenge again! I'm attempting a complete rewrite of my one The Beautiful people...the same basic idea but completely different characters and mostly different storylines. Got 500 words so far! Laughing
Em_J

Blimey, that's a mega re-write!! I struggle with writing novels now, I used to think they were easy and short stories hard!
April_Rose

Me too but I think my writing has improved as a result of doing short stories....yeah I was reading over it the other day and realised there was some potential there but overall it was pretty bad!
Em_J

I'm scared to read my old stuff! Laughing
April_Rose

Yeah this was pretty bad! Laughing
Em_J

Em_J
