Songs that made an impression

Are there any songs you know that transport you back to the moment you first heard them?

That made such an impression you can still remember the details of the sights, smells, tastes of the place you were you first listened to them, so much so that hearing them now no matter how many times you've heard the song since transports you back to the moment you first heard the song?

I'm just listening to "Girl Stand Still" by Catherine Wheel, and it takes me right back, no matter how often I listen to it. I'm in an old graveyard with the guy I was going out with when I was 17, laughing at all the girls in my class getting so excited over going to the prom ad the stupid graduation mass they're all going to (I don't have to as I'm not catholic) the following day. I can smell the freshly cut grass of late spring, taste the cheap cider we were drinking that night. I'm there.

Another song that transports me is "Hello" by Shakespeare sister. I don't even know any of their other songs, but I'd just broken up with another boyfriend and my granny had given me a free CD when she was over that was in one of the dutch papers she got at the airport. I stuck it on and that song was on it, it just clicked with me as I waited for the solar eclipse (which was pretty crap in north west ireland) (it was summer 1999 I think) and put this song on repeat. Again, if I listen to it it takes me back ther - I am in that sitting room of the rented house, I can see the Tv and video player, the window I'm looking out of, the CD player on its shelf, the cans and bottles left over from the night before.

Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams takes me away as well, to Portugal when I was 16, a clifftop, a handsome barman...

UB40's version of "I can't help falling in love with you" reminds me of my first proper crush, I still see the guy when I hear the song....

Anyway, I've probably disclosed way too much information here but I'll blame the wine...anyway...

anyone else have a song that takes you right back to a moment?

Reef - Place your hands - reminds me of Freshers week at uni, meeting all my mates and drinking lager and black out of a plastic cup (classy). makes me want to jump around like a drunken fool!

Keane - Bedshaped. I can't listen to it as it reminds me of someone that was special a while ago, it makes me all nostalgic (and I hate Keane so it annoys me that it does that!!)

Nirvana - Lithium. Takes me back to being an angsty teenager who thought the world was against her. I always expect it to cut off about 10secs before the end because I had it on an old tape that I'd recorded from a friend, only the tape was too short!

Bridge over Troubled Water. Simon and Garfunkel- They were my Grandad's favourite singers and we used to listen to this on my grandparents record player all the time. After he died it took me a long time to be able to listen to the album, I still have to skip this one because it reduces me to a wailing wreck within seconds.

The Doors - Crystal ship. Um, I can't explain this one too much Embarassed but it makes me smile every time I hear it, heh heh.

Blimey, there's loads... think i've revealed enough for the moment though!!

I know, I've loads as well! I love how music can do that though!

There are loads with very embarrassing memories that I couldn't share here, but it's making me cackle like a madwoman the more i think about them!

EDIT - actually, I have to share this one.

Pretty Woman - Roy Orbison. I had a brief and unimpressive career as a model when I was in my teens and I think the moment I realised that it was the most ridiculous industry was when I was walking down a catwalk to this song, dressed in a jumper with a panda drawn on it, a big black hat and some hotpants. I got the giggles (which was baaaaad, this was the Kate Moss heroin chic time) and just laughed all the way down and back the catwalk. I got in loads of trouble, cracking up (in that sense at least) was NOT allowed. Soon after that i decided that I didn't really fit in...
Still makes me laugh at how stupid I looked and how totally inappropriate the song was!!

Laughing Yeah I have a few of those as well, the ones I posted are enough I think, without going into the rest!

I think the one I just fessed up to is the most embarrasing one I can actually admit to....makes me chuckle even now!
April_Rose

Laughing That is a good one!

The worst thing is that my mother still has photographic evidence....

I don't really have any! Mind, that's probably cos I have a crap memory for song titles. I'll try and think. . .

Daydream Believer by The Monkees, reminds me of the bestest holiday ever with a load of college mates in Staffordshire. And I got the holiday for free cos they all chipped in to pay for me to go! Bless 'em! Lots of drunken erm. . . shenanigans.

There's a song that my mate Gandalf says reminds him of me but for the life of me I can't remember what it is!! Embarassed

The JCB song by Nizlopi reminds me of a fella I used to go out with. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

The Birdy Song (!) makes me think of all my old birthday parties when I was little. I used to dance with my dad to that song. I don't really get on with my dad but tis nice to have a few nice memories anyway!

There's a song by the Bloodhound Gang that also reminds me of college. . .

And that's it I reckon! I'm sure there's probably more. Oh! And anything by PJ and Duncan cos my mates love to wind me up about how much I love them and hearing any of their songs just makes me laugh. Very Happy
