Poor Ratings Continue

Wednesday night's ratings followed their usual pattern, with FOX and "American Idol" leading the way, although "Lost" slipped a little more thanks partly to an even smaller-than-usual lead-in.

FOX averaged a 9.5 rating/16 share in primetime, easily beating CBS, 6.6/11, for the top spot. NBC's 4.6/8 was good for third, edging ABC's 4.3/7. The CW trailed with a 2.7/4.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, FOX's 6.0 rating more than doubled the 2.8 for second-place ABC. CBS was right behind at 2.7. NBC averaged 2.1 and The CW 1.9.

"Bones," 6.6/11, put FOX on top at 8 p.m. with a 6.6/11. CBS' "Jericho," 5.4/9, finished second for the hour. "Friday Night Lights" put NBC in third with a 3.9/7, while "America's Next Top Model," 3.4/6, took fourth for The CW. ABC's "Great American Dream Vote" wasn't so great, finishing in fifth.

The "Idol" results show, 16.0/25, and "'Til Death," 9.0/14, kept FOX on top at 9 p.m. A "Criminal Minds" repeat, 7.2/11, finished second for CBS. "Crossing Jordan" kept NBC in third at 4.7/7. "According to Jim" and "In Case of Emergency" averaged 3.0/5 for ABC, which was good enough to beat a "Search for the Next Doll" rerun on The CW.

At 10 p.m., CBS' "CSI: NY" repeat led in households with a 7.2/12, although ABC's "Lost" (6.8/12) had more total viewers. Still, that was lower than usual for "Lost" in its new timeslot. NBC's "Medium" came in at 5.1/9.

FOX scored another across-the-board ratings win Wednesday, with "Bones" and "'Til Death" doing their part to support "American Idol."

For the night, FOX averaged a 9.2 rating/15 share. CBS came in second with a 6.3/10. ABC, 4.9/8, edged NBC, 4.8/8, for third. The CW earned a 2.8/5.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, FOX's 5.4 rating was the clear leader, with ABC a good ways back in second at 3.0. CBS, 2.7, finished third, followed by NBC, 2.2, and The CW, 2.0.

"Bones" put FOX on top at 8 p.m. with a 6.6/11. "Jericho," 5.1/9, grabbed second place for CBS. A pair of "George Lopez" episodes on ABC finished third. "Friday Night Lights" delivered a 3.7/6 for NBC, edging out "America's Next Top Model," 3.5/6, on The CW.

Though down some from last week, the "American Idol" results show, 15.1/24, and "'Til Death," 8.5/13, still ruled the 9 p.m. hour for FOX. CBS stayed in second with a "Criminal Minds" rerun, 6.7/11. ABC took the lead at 10 p.m. as "Lost" posted a 7.1/12. CBS was right behind with a "CSI: NY" repeat, 7.0/12. NBC's "Medium" came in at 5.7/9.

latest ratings info and information

After taking a beating this season, ABC's Lost experienced a slight up tick in the ratings last week. The 0.03 jump from the previous week was good enough to give network executives hope that the creative improvement that they have seen in their prized show lately will start translating into improved ratings heading into the May sweeps.

Throughout the season, original episodes of Lost have attracted lower ratings than last year. The serialized saga had been on a steady, weekly decline since coming back from a three-month hiatus that alienated many loyal viewers.

Following its return to 10 p.m. ET Wednesdays—an hour later than in the fall—ABC watched the ratings plummet from a 6.4 rating/15 share among adults 18-49 for the spring debut to a 4.9/13 by the ninth episode on April 4. So last week's 5.2/14 turned out to be the best Lost news that network executives have seen in months.

But the upward trend will need to continue as they prepare to set the fall schedule next month.

To avoid the scheduling fiasco of the past few seasons, ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson has indicated, Lost will run straight through next season with original episodes. A fall start would make it collide with the holidays, so odds-makers are betting that it will follow the same path of Fox's 24, by airing January-May.

ABC says Lost is the most-recorded show on DVRs, but that's a measurement count advertisers won't consider. If the network wants to keep the franchise away from Fox's American Idol and make affiliates happy by offering a decent lead-in to their late newscasts, it will need to continue airing it at 10.

That is why the network has made strengthening the 8-10 p.m. Wednesday block leading into Lost a top priority this development season. The drama has not been helped much by the assortment of weak comedies that have been playing there.

ABC scheduling chief Jeff Bader declined to comment on possible scheduling scenarios. But he will undoubtedly have his work cut out for him in the weeks ahead.

Maybe things are looking up at last...

(Broadcasting & Cable) _ Fox's send-off to Sanjaya http://www.eliminatesanjaya.com/?gclid=CPyXvMPAz4sCFRTDSgodT2xACA attracted enough viewers to give the network an easy Wednesday night win in the 18-49 demo.

There were tears --and likely some suppressed cheers--as the teenybopper heartthrob was booted from the show, a move that generated a 10.9 rating/27 share at 9-10 p.m. That was more than enough to give Fox the night with a 6.7/18 average, brought down by Bones with 2.5/7 at 8-9 p.m.

ABC took second on the strength of Lost at 10-11 (5.1/13), although a repeat of Lost at 9-10 received a 1.5/4, the second-lowest rated show of the night

CBS was third for Wednesday night with a 2.8/8. Its top show was a repeat of CSI: NY at 10 p.m. with a 3.2/8.

NBC was fourth for the night with a 2.3.The ratings were helped by a new reality improv show, Thank God You're Here, which averaged a 2.7/8 at 8-9.

The CW was a strong fifth with a 2/5, thanks to America's Next Top Model. The reality show continued its winning ways, recording a 2.6/8 at 8-9, and beating ABC, CBS and Fox in the time period.

latest Ratings information - they're not as good as they were in previous seasons, but are getting a lot better! Very Happy

(Broadcasting & Cable) _ American Idol Gives Back generated some $30 million for charity, according to the show. At its peak, more than 30 million viewers tuned into the program on Wednesday night.

The show, a two-hour charity event, grew every half hour to peak at an 11.8 rating/29 share in the key 18-49 demo at 9:30-10. The show powered Fox to a 10.0/26 18-49 average for the night, according to Nielsen overnight numbers.

Idol's charity extended to the contestants with nobody being voted off. Host Ryan Seacrest said they didn't have the heart to vote anybody off on a charity show, but said the votes would be counted toward next week when two would-be Idols will be booted.

The next closest network in the ratings race was ABC at a 2.7/7. It was unable to crack a 2 rating up against Idol, but its average was boosted by Lost, which recorded a 4.9/13 at 10-11 p.m. That number is far from its heyday ratings but sufficient to win the time period easily.

CBS was close behind at a 2.6/7. Its top show was CSI: NY, which averaged a 3.2/9 for second place behind Lost at 10 p.m.

NBC was unable to average a 2 rating for the night, despite a 2.4/7 average for Medium at 10 p.m. The Peacock's average was hurt by a repeat of Thank God Your Here, which only mustered a 1.5/4 against Idol.

The CW was fifth with a 1.5/4, led by America's Next Top Model at a 1.8/5.
