Official Discussion Thread - Episode 9

Discuss Episode 9 - Stranger in a Strange Land here!

(Hope nobody minds me starting this thread!) Very Happy

What did you all think?!
boondocksaintchk

i thought it was a good episode. but i felt a bit disappointed. all week long they've been hyping answers to 3 big mysteries. i didn't feel they were answered very well. jack's tattoo means he's a leader, but fearful of his responsibility...duh! i think we established that already just from watching him in previous episodes.

the 1 thing i'm curious about is the final sentence with that sheriff woman: "he walks amongst us, but is not one of us" or something like that. i'm kinda intgrigued about what that means and how that plays into jack's character and his role on the island.

it was interesting seeing the 2 kids that were kidnapped from ana lucia's group. they seem to be okay. and then karl said they give the kids "a better life"...i'm still puzzled by that.

it's good to see jack and juliet bonding. i'm curious about the the "homes" of these others and seeing how they live. guess i'll just have to wait longer.

in spite of being a bit disappointed, i'll keep watching bcuz i love the complicated mysteries that is lost. can't wait for next week!

I was really bored during this episode actually! Got up and wandered off at one point. I really do not want to see anymore Jack episodes! I may have to spoon out my own eyes if there are any more. The entire episode was just pointless, I thought.

The next ep looks better.

The begining did seem a little slow and pretty much pointless, but it did start to pick up towards the end. Overall was a good episode, even if the 3 big mysteries werent explained too well.
I cant believe im actually going to say this, but that episode did turn me into a bit of a Jack/Juliet shipper! Surprised I know he'll end up with Kate, they've had chemistry since the start, but after watching Jack and Juliet in this episode, it seems they have alot in common too.
. . . I was glad to finally get to see Cindy and the kids again, but after not seeing them since episode 7 of season 2, it seemed a bit of a letdown the way they were introduced again. I was expecting it to be mindblowing! and im also disappointed that Karl set off alone Sad Just as I was starting to like him!
Also, did anybody pick up on what the 3 big mysteries were? and the answers to them?
1 was Jacks tatoos, and the wholse he's not one of us thing. The other was the tailies, and they've got a better life thing. What was the other?
April_Rose

I don't know. It was better than most Jack episodes in my opinion. I was pleased to finally find out about the tatoos, though I found what they said "he walks among us but is not one of us" to be more interesting than what they mean "leader, scared, blah blah blah"

Interesting to see Cindy again, and it does raise the question once again of whether she was taken or whether she was always one of the Others - did they talk her around in the time since she was taken (only a month or so) or was she always on their side? Even if they didn't know the plane was going to crash she might have been one of their people working on the outside.

Carl's view was interesting - he still seemed to believe their lives are better, even though he knew that Ben would kill him if he saw him again - better life as long as you don't go near the boss's daughter seems a bit traditional, hardly a revolutionary way of doing things. I was disappointed to see him go though, as I'd hoped to learn more about the Others from him.

I like Jack and Juliet as a couple much better than I like him with Kate - they have morein common, a better understanding. I was pleased he saved her, even if he did do it in his usual melodramatic way, as I'm interested in her.

Perhaps another mystery was why the Others don't have a surgeon when they seem to be so based around medicine - and the answer being that it was Ethan, and he was killed? That did make sense.

The flashbacks were a bit boring apart from the one he got the tatoo and the one he got the crap kicked out of him Smile, but then I'm not a Jack fan so I am biased in this respect.

I like the sheriff woman, she seems interesting, and we are learning a lot more about the Others now, bit by bit.

Lots of tension between Kate and Sawyer, that was to be expected I suppose. It'll be interesting when they go back to camp and try to convince Locke, Sayid etc to go to the little island, and Jack's been taken to the camp of the Others.

Overall not bad for a Jack episode, there was plenty in it, good to see Alex being a rebel again, I find her interesting, she is in one sense a typical sixteen year old, rebelling against the conventions that she grew up in, it's just that those conventions are so strange!

Good to know at least that Cindy and the children were with the Others all along, what were they going to see though? Juliet's trial? That's a bit bizzare. And although they have plenty of people and guns they abandoned the island in case Locke, Sayid, and a few more turned up - they're so secretive!

Overall a 7/10 for me for the episode, and 5 for the flashback.

ok just watched it on sky one last night and i have to say, although i am a massive jack fan and enjoyed the episode, i was a little dissapointed with the "answers". i feel it took a while to get started and when it did these answers weren't answered as explicitly as i expected! but hey that's lost mysterious as ever.

the flashback too was a bit bizzare, very out of the blue but the twist in the meaning of the tattoo was good and i think it's my favourite quote so far "he walks amongst us but he is not one of us" i love it!

i liked the development with jack and juliet and cant wait to see how that goes, but can we trust juliet? kate and sawyer's relationship too took an unexpected turn for me, i think sawyer wants more out of it than kate is going to give. was disapointed that they didnt turn back!!!

as for the place that the others live...do we know where it is? is it back on the original island?

didnt see a preview of next weeks show though, is it the claire-centric one?
April_Rose

Yeah the Others' home is on the main island, not sure where exactly, and as for whether we can trust Juliet I think she can be trusted in one way only - that she is going to put her own safety first. She is desperate to get off the island and return to her sister, so she will trample on whoever she has to to get there. I think she is starting to have feelings for Jack, but I don't think she'd hesitate to leave him behind if it meant she'd a better chance to get away herself!

I think Sawyer and Kate were always going to end up sparring again, it's how their relationship goes as neither of them wants to show their softer side for long. I didn't think they would turn back, there was no point at that stage - I look forward to what'll happen when they do go back to the little island with Locke and Sayid and there's no one there though! Plus I can see Jack getting more interested in what the Others are doing, so he might end up feeling conflicted - after all, that's what Ben wants, is for Jack to stay, so he's going to be trying to manipulate and pursuade him to do so.
xanderwayne

ye i can see that to, but its one of the main questions are the others really the bad guys!?

i dont think kate and co will end up back on the other island, i reckon karl will help them out. but whether they take jack back, or even if he wants 2 go back, thats another question! as for his ticket off the island i very much doubt that he will take it i mean he doesnt have much to go back to does he! poor guy!
April_Rose

No, he seems like he wants to leave, but I'd say he just wants Ben to tell him how to leave so he can let the ret of them know. The Others sure think they're the good guys, but I suppose that has all sorts of resonances around the world - most wars are started on the basis that one crowd think they're the good guys and others are doing something wrong, but it's never that simple, and I'd say it's the same with the Others.
xanderwayne

ye i suppose, but i dont think jack will leave even if he gets the chance, he wont leave the rest i dont think
jonny14

It was nice to see a non fighting episode.
