Lost makers dicuss endIt seems the powers that be with regard to Lost have decided to discuss with network ABC when the series will end in order to plan the rest of the show in the most effetive way possible .Carlton Cuse admitted that the X-files probably ran a couple of seasons longer than it shoudl have and doesn't want Lost to be seen in this way.
They seem to be talking about four or five seasons, about 100 episodes, and say that the next season won't have a break like this one as they think it's partly responsible for the drop in figures.

Heres another article, its quite old, but still. . .
ABC mulls 'Lost' wrap-up
Producers try to decide show's end date
By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER
ABC, Touchstone TV and producers of 'Lost' are looking ahead on how to end the popular series.
ABC, Touchstone TV and the producers behind "Lost" are actively discussing how and when to retire the hit castaway drama.
According to "Lost" exec producer Carlton Cuse, picking an end date for "Lost" would help the show's creative team to map the next several seasons as they plot the show's thick mythology.
"It's time for us to find an endpoint to the show," said Cuse, speaking Sunday at ABC's portion of the TV Critics Assn. press tour. "It's a struggle for us, because we don't know if we have three years, four years or more to go. If we had an endpoint, then we could figure out where everything goes."
Such a move would placate fans of the show, who frequently gripe that they have no indication whether the show's ever-increasing mysteries will pay off. A set timetable would send a message to viewers that all of their questions will be answered eventually.
"Once we figure out when that will be, a lot of those concerns will go away," Cuse said. "The worst point is when a show ends and no one cares. We don't want that to happen. We want to make the shows good for as long as we do the show."
Cuse suggested the show could end once it hits 100 episodes in season five ("Lost" is currently shooting episode 62). But it's far more likely that "Lost" would continue at least through its seventh season, when the show's thesps' current contracts expire.
ABC Entertainment prexy Steve McPherson said discussions about the endgame for "Lost" are ongoing, but no plan has been identified as yet.
McPherson, Cuse and exec producer Damon Lindelof said they were conscious of the need to ensure "Lost" doesn't overstay its welcome with viewers.
"None of us want to be doing the show that's the stalling show -- 'We're building sandcastles this week,'" Lindelof quipped.
Cuse pointed to "The X-Files" as "a great show that probably lasted two seasons too long."
"That show was a bit of a cautionary tale for us," he said.
Determining an end date for a popular franchise isn't unprecedented; Cuse cited the "Harry Potter" books as a model the show would like to emulate.
"J.K. Rowling announced seven 'Harry Potter' books, (conveying a) certainty that that story is drawing to a conclusion," he said.
As for this year's split "Lost" season, McPherson said the net would run all 22 episodes of "Lost" straight through next year, perhaps starting in midseason (a la "24").
. . . So we could have 7 seasons! Thats great news! I want it to last forveer, but I guess after a while it'll turn stale. 5 seasons probably would be best before the ratings dip dramatically, but i'd still watch it if it had 10!
I guess 7 is a bit too much though.

I'd be ok with seven, as long as the writing is still good, as there's so many characters, plus a mix of action on the island and flashbacks, and the tiemline moves so slowly, I think 7 would be worth doing.

If it didn't focus sooo much on one character (Jack), then it could go on for 6 or 7 seasons. I would say 5 seasons at the least, if the producers make changes in character screen time then possibly more.

Yeah, it would be good if we saw more of Hurley and less of Jack, we don't see enough Hurley flashbacks.

I would like to see 5, but i don't understand how the 'film' is going to work if they carry on with that.

I dont think i'd really like a film - I'd just prefer more seasons. I dont see why every1 was complaining about it moving too slow. I think so far, its been pretty good. . . and to be honest, I think the last few episodes have revealed too much - think about it, the more answers we get earlier, then it'll probably mean it'll end sooner, because there wont be much left to reveal.

mm, I agree, and I'd also prefer more episodes to a film, I mean, what could a film do that the tv show can't? The budget for Tv shows is bigger than ever before in history, and the other main reason they used to make films was to bring the whole thing to a wider audience but there's hardly anyone in the world that hasn't heard of lost.

So, what is every1 gunna do when LOST does end? It may not be for a while yet, but its gunna end at some point.
Its a great show, and it'll be a shame for it to go. Once its ended, i'll probably buy all the box sets, rewatch every episode every now and again, and i'll probably follow the cast around for a bit, see what other shows they get involved with. It wont be a total loss though, because now I've found Heroes!
Heroes is my backup

Yeah, I've got a few other shows I watch, the Sopranos will finish this year which is a shame but 24 could go on for a long time yet, when Lost finishes I bet there will be more shows out there, TV is getting better and better after a bit of a dull period, budgets are way up and I'm sure there will be more by the time Lost is finished - hopefully we keep the forum up and running though!
I'd say some of the actors will go on to be pretty big in films, others will get parts in new tv shows, and soem will sadly probably disappear.
I'll probably get all the dvd's as well and get all nostalgic but it depends, if I don't like how it ends it might spoil it for me a bit
