Loose Ends
Chapter One - An Unfortunate Dropoff
It’s 2:30am on a dark winters night in a secluded part of the small desert. The track that runs through here is the only thing connecting the towns New Orlys, and the small town of Dhansford. This would be the last journey that the train about to pass would ever take, and the event about to occur, would change the passengers’ lives forever. After this, nothing would ever be the same. From this point on, they were all as good as dead.
The light breeze that blew a few dead leaves by, was soon turned into a heavy wind as the leaves were thrown into the air when the train swept past. It was pitch black, and why the passengers were travelling at this time, you'll find out later. For now, we will start from the beginning, how it all began.
This train was the last for the night, the next that would arrive would be 6:00am, but something didn't seem right. A few lights flashed on and off, but then switched back to normal moments later. The track it was approaching was slightly rusty, and seemed like it hadn't been used in years, although it was a regular route taken by the trains travelling between the two towns. It was growing closer every second, picking up speed as it went. Suddenly, a loud screech filled the air, and could probably be heard for miles, as the train ripped off the track, tumbling down a small hill nearby, exploding into a ball of flames, lighting up the night sky.
An Hour Earlier . . . [Sarah]
"I knew I shouldn't have left you alone, mum. I knew it. I should’ve been there to take care of you," Sarah muttered to herself. She was sat on a small worn out wooden bench, waiting for the train to arrive. She looked up and glanced around at the others waiting there too. Most of them seemed to be filled with joy, wrapped up in their own lives. She sighed, then took the silver-beaded necklace from around her neck and clutched it tight in her hand. She had bought this for her mother several days ago, but never got around to giving it to her. These past few days she had been focused on something, or someone, else. Jonathon. He was her ex-husband. She had seen him earlier today, and asked him the question she needed answered, although she didn't get it. Her mother’s death was probably her punishment for running back to her ex, especially after what he had done to her. She should’ve learned her lesson, but no, she wanted him back. The necklace still lay tight in her hand, as she sobbed quietly. Burying her mother with this necklace seemed the right thing to do. Her mother had previously owned one, but lost it when they moved house. It did mean a lot to her, so Sarah had secretly been saving up for it. Now that she had finally bought it, her mother had gone. Now she'd never get to see her mother’s face when she gave it to her. She sighed again, and then placed it in her pocket, as the train arrived.
Back At Crash Site . . .
Moments after the crash, there seemed to be a strange eerie silence. A girl lay on the floor, completely lifeless. Her body seemed cold, as the moonlight shone on it. This girl was Sarah. Sarah Birling. Suddenly her eyes opened, filled with fear, as she took in everything going on around her. She seemed unable to move, frozen with fear and disbelief. Tears filled her eyes, as she gazed up at the sky, outstretching her arm for help - but it never seemed to come. A huge explosion then occurred, flinging her into a piece of the wreckage. Luckily it was one of the chairs, softening her landing. Her hearing was back now. The explosion must have caused her temporary deafness to wear off. A terrifying scream could be heard now, and the calls for help made her realise that she was probably the only person able to give it to them. She shook her head, and once again, glanced around her. There were several passengers, some injured, most dead. She gulped, pulled herself up, and ran to the aid of a woman clutching her stomach, who seemed to be in a terrible amount of agony. She was used to helping people, especially her mum, so this wasn't really new to her. "Where do you hurt?" Sarah asked the girl, trying to act calm in an attempt of keeping the girl calm too. "It’s my stomach, it hurts! Please! It’s my baby! You gotta help, I haven’t felt it move since the crash!" The girl sobbed into Sarah’s arms. Sarah looked the girl hard in the eye. "Don’t worry! It’s all going to be ok, you'll be fine, and so will your baby". She gave her a friendly smile, and then ran off, looking for someone who could help. "Wait!" the girl called back "Don’t leave me! Please!" she wailed. Sarah took a step back, wiped the sweat off her forehead, then glanced back at her. "I’m going to see if anyone can help. Wait there!" she called back, trying to reassure her. Although it wasn't like she could move. The girl wiped the tears from her eyes, and sobbed quietly, waiting for Sarah to come back, hoping her baby would be all right.
Just Over An Hour Ago, Back At Train Station . . . [Emily]
Emily stood there, staring into Russell's eyes, holding his hand tight on her stomach. "I still can’t believe it! I’m going to be a dad!" Russell told her excitedly, as he rubbed her stomach softly. "So, you thought of any names yet? If it’s a boy how about William? After my father, you now how happy that'd make him," he asked her, giving her a warm kiss on the cheek. "How about it?" he asked again. Emily tried to put a smile on, but she was hiding something. "You all right? Was it something I said?" he asked, concerned. Emily shook her head and rested it on his shoulder. "No, I just can’t believe it! We're having a baby!" she muttered. Russell smiled again, and wrapped his arms around her. "I can’t either, but you know what? I think I can do it, I’m going to be the perfect dad!" Emily still rested her head on his shoulder. She sighed. She wanted to tell him, she couldn't live a lie, but she loved him too much. She couldn't bear to loose him, although she loved Griff too.
The train had pulled up now, so she shook him off, trying to find a way out of this awkward moment, and rushed off to the train. "Come on, we're going to be late," she called back; giving him another fake smile, masking all the lies she hid inside.
Back At Crash Site . . .
Emily had begun sobbing again, as she glanced around frantically in search of Russell. He was nowhere to be seen. "Russell!" she called out, struggling to outstretch her arm, hoping she'd feel the warmth of his skin meet hers. Nothing. She had waited for what seemed a lifetime, although it was only 10 minutes, but there was no sign of him. She closed her eyes tight, and thrust her hand against the wreckage she leant against. "Russell!!" she called out again. Suddenly, she heard a few footsteps from up ahead. She wiped the tears from her eyes with a piece of tissue from her pocket; it had been used several times over. Suddenly a dark figure came into view. "Russell?" she muttered to herself.
Out of the shadows, walked Sarah, much to Emily's disappointment. "I found help" she told her reassuringly, "this is Kristen, she’s a nurse. She'll take care of you.” Sarah gave Emily another smile "It’s going to be ok. The baby will be fine," she told her. Emily's eyes were flooded with tears again. "No . . ." she shook her head, then looked up at Sarah. "It’s Russell, my boyfriend. He was sat next to me on the train," said Emily, barely able to speak. Sarah walked closer, and knelt down beside her. "It'll be ok, I'll find him for you.” Sarah pulled herself back up, and put on a smile for Emily. The chances were that her boyfriend was dead, there were only a few survivors, and she couldn't recall any of their names being Russell, but she went off and looked anyway. Anything she could do to help.
As Sarah jogged around the wreckage, she fealt something hitting her leg as she ran. She stopped in her tracks, and reached into her pocket. It was her phone. A look of relief washed over her face instantly, as she flipped the screen up. Why she hadn't thought of phoning for help earlier was beyond her. Her face dropped as she pushed the power button repeatedly, when nothing happened.
"No use trying, it aint gunna work" called a voice from behind her. She turned around, and looked at the man now infront of her in confusion. "What do you mean?", she asked making her way over.
The man lifted up his half empty bottle of scotch to his throat, and took a swig. "The phone, it aint working, right?", he asked, already knowing the answer. "Mine aint either, the crash must've done something to them, nothing electrical seems to be working". He took another swig from his bottle, then shuffled around. "But what would I know" he muttered.
Sarah didn't understand how the crash could've damaged it, it was in perfect shape, yet she placed it back in her pocket and made her way over to the man. "Your name doesn't happen to be Russell does it?" she asked, wiping the sweat from her forehead with her fingertips.
Not Long Before, Back On Train . . . [Harry]
"Ticket please" asked the trains ticket collector. Harry placed his hand into his pocket, and pulled out his ticket. He handed it over to the man stood over him, and watched as his nostrils twitched, as they picked up the smell of alcohol on his clothing. The man backed away slightly, then punched a hole into the ticket, handing it over, then rushing over to women sat in the seat infront. Harry placed the ticket back into his jeans pocket, then pulled out a photo from his pocket. He stared at it hard, as a look of guilt washed over his face. Suddenly he fealt a strange warmth rush up his throat, knowing what it was, he placed the photo back in his pocket, and vomited into the plastic shopping bag beside him.
Moments later, he removed his head from the bag, and wiped the remainder of his dinner that was now dripping off his lips with his sleeve. He looked up, and noticed the ticket conductor seemed to be watching, along with a few other passengers. "What you looking - " he interupted himself, stopping another of his outbursts, as he continued to vomit into his bag.
Back At Crash Site . . .
The man turned back around to face her, then dropped his now empty bottle to the ground. "Sorry be a disappointment, but no. Im Harry". He pulled himself to his feet, struggling to stand from the amount of achohol running through his system. He dusted off the ashes from his worn out jeans, then looked up at the girl. "I'd better be off", he mumbled, wiping the drool from his mouth. "Im gunna go get help, the cops will sort this mess out. See you later Freckles". He gave her a smirk, then set off away from the wreckage.
Sarah knew he wasn't going to get very far, and would probably end up collapsing half way, but she had bigger things to deal with. There were people here who needed her help. She was about to get back to her search for Russel, and other survivors that may need her help, but stopped and looked over at Harry. "My names Sarah by the way. . . and Dhansford is that way", she called out, pointing to the opposite direction he was heading. Harry turned around, feeling like an idiot, then began heading off in the right direction. Sarah breathed out heavily, then made her way back to the wreckage.
Back towards the farside of the train wreckage, lay Emily. She grasped Kristens hand tight, and began breathing heavily. "You have to calm down" Kristen told her, growing concerned. "Too much stress can cause an early labour. Do you really want to have your baby here?". Emily began shaking her head rapidly, she sqeezed her head tight, and bit down on her lip. "No", she sobbed into Kristens arms, still breathing heavily. Kristen looked up, and stared into the distance for any sign of a car passing by. Nothing. She sighed, then moved her attention back to Emily. Suddenly her eyes widened, as she watched a wet patch form around Emily's crotch. She gulped hard, then opened her mouth. "Emily, your baby is coming".
Emily looked down, then back up at Kristen in disbelief. "No. . . No. . . This cant be happening. Im only 8 months! Please, you have to do something!", she called out in a panic, as her head turned red, and sweat began to pour from it. "Your baby is coming wether you like it or not. I need you to take deap breaths. Breath in through your nose, and out through your mouth. Can you do that for me?", Kristen asked. Emily nodded, and bit hard on her lip as she closed her eyes, taking deap breaths, praying that it'd all be over. "Thats good, thats real good", Kristen told her calmly. "Now Emily, theres only one thing left to do. You need to push! Here, squeeze my hand as hard as you can". Emily gripped her hand tight, and pushed with all her might, letting out a deafening scream. "RUSSELL!!!".
Suddenly her scream stopped, but another scream could be heared. Emily looked down between her legs, and watched as a baby was pulled out. Tears dropped from her eyes madly as Kristen handed the baby over. "Its a boy", Kristen muttered softly. Emily smiled, and held the baby in her arms tight, wrapping part of her shirt around his chest. She stared into the babies deap blue eyes, and cradled him softly. Kristen wiped the blood from her hands into the ground below, then looked up at Emily. "You gave him a name?" she asked curiously. Emily stopped cradling the baby for a moment, and looked at Kristen. "Yes" she muttered, placing her hand in his, feeling the warmth of his skin touch hers. "This is William".
Suddenly a few footsteps could be heared rushing towards them. It was Sarah. Emily knew what was coming next, as Russel wasn't with her. "Im sorry" Sarah muttered, as she stared at the baby in Emily's arms. "I couldn't find him. He's gone". Emily knew what was being said, yet she was unable to take it in. The pain she fealt inside was unbearable, and her stomach fealt like she was riding a rollercoaster. He couldn't be dead, he just couldn't be - he was a dad! She'd give anything to see him one last time, just to see the look on his face when she showed him their son. William. She closed her eyes tight, trying to mask the pain that grew inside of her. She had to be strong, Russell wouldn't want her feeling like this. She took a deap breath, and opened her eyes. Suddenly she realised that Sarah and Kristens attention was no longer on her or the baby, they seemed to be looking at something else. Emily wiped the tears that fulled her eyes, and struggled to turn around. Up in the distance, a light could be seen, masked by the thick smoke that lurked around the crash site. It seemed to be growing closer by the second. The three of them stared at it, along with a few other survivors behind, until Sarah got up, and began to wave her arms. "Over here!" she called out. Had help arrived?

Thanks I've decided to change it to a script rather than a story. I know that theres no chance of it ever happening, but its easier to write it as a script. . . im gunna be redoing what I've done so far aswell, no big changes, but there hasn't really been much character developement so far.
I'll have it posted up soon!
