I just don't feel excited. (A rant on Lost)Just not feeling excited about Lost returning, so thought I'd write about it (was trying to start writing a story, but wasn't getting anywhere).
Lost is back in about 10 days. I just don't feel all that excited. When I went to a streaming website I use a lot earlier this afternoon, and found that the first four episodes of the new series of 24 were up, a day early, I almost jumped off the couch I was so excited. During the week I loved watching the new episodes of Scrubs. With Lost, there's just no feeling of anticipation, none of that delight.
There are a few reasons for this. One is the extremely disappointing finale to season 4, itself a disappointing season overall, in which we found out (yawn) that Locke was the guy in the coffin. We learned hardly anything more during the course of the season than what we knew at the end of Season 3, and the only bits of it that were of real interest was the Ben flashforward episode in which we learned that there is some history, some connection between himself and Charles Widmore. The Jack and Kate melodramatics only served to increase the hatred many of us feel for this patronising character, painted as a hero while fulfilling none of the requirements of that role.
Many of the spoilers and leaked information about Season five indicates that it will be primarily based on the efforts of the Oceanic 6 (Jack, Kate, Aaron, Sun, Sayid and Hurley), probably led or at least influenced by Ben, to get back to the island, several years after they left. I want to know what happens to Sawyer, Locke, Juliet etc when the island is moved after the Oceanic 6 leave, not that "they all die because Jack left".
The news that Matthew Fox received a pay rise, taking his earnings above that of the rest of the cast, is also disconcerting. What was always best about Lost was the strength of all the characters, but since the promise of early episodes we have seen many of these characters diluted almost beyond recognition. The prime example is Kate, the bad girl-independent woman type, who becomes a whiny, clingy and needy type who is nothing but a foil for Jack.
I still retain hope that the show will regain its earlier momentum, but for that to happen the focus needs to be on the island - i.e. where the people are "Lost" - and the mysteries behind the island itself, not on the mysteries of Jack's relationship with Kate, or his father, or his ex-wife. Fingers crossed the powers that be will recognise this in time. As it stands, I'll still watch the episode, but it's certainly not the most anticipated event of the year so far for me.

I agree. Lost has got pretty crappy and I can't say as I'm excited about it either. You know I admin on Lostie so I still go on there and whatnot and people are getting so excited I can't work it out! Has gone so far downhill for me I'm not sure if it can climb back up. I don't get excited about any tv shows any more.

I'm really excited about 24, it was meant to be on last year but when the writer's strike happened, they didn't want to risk breaking the series up like happened with Lost, so they didn't show it at all, been waiting a year and a half for it!
Yeah, I don't know if Lost can get back there - I still hope it can though. My mm told me the other day that I'm an optimist, maybe she's right!

Well I'm a cynic and I reckon Lost is dead! I try mentioning stuff like this on the other forum, thinking I can't be the only person who thinks this, but nobody pays me any attention.

I'm sure there must be other people who agree....it can't just be the three of us on here!
Em_J

I really think it is! Although when I worked at the hotel my mates there were starting to say it had gotten crappy too.
I didn't even realise it was only ten days to go, that's how much attention I've been paying to it!

I think it's the 21st it's back in the US, so it'll be the 22nd we get it here...the only reason I know is hubby was asking a few days ago so I looked it up! He isn't as fed up with it as I am.
Em_J
Maybe he will be soon!
I think it's all the Jack that makes me so fed up with it. He's in it far too much and makes me so angry, that it just affects the whole show for me!
Gotta scoot for tea, I'll be back to rant more in a bit!

Ok laters!
He agreed the finale of the last season was crap anyway, that was a start!
Yeah, a lot of it is Jack for me as well, I hate the character (no true hero would EVER EVER EVER say "I was the one that saved you" or whatever the exact sentence was), and I hate the way he's given so much more screentime, plus the way he takes strong women and demeans and diminishes them (Kate but also Juliet).
A lot of what I loved about the show was the island itself though, the mysteries - Danielle, the monster, Richard and how he never ages, the dangers of pregnancy, the four-toed statue, the numbers and Hurley's connection to them, Widmore and what his connection to the place is....and now I wonder if any of that will be explained.

You try to tell Jack zealots that Jack's not a hero and then back up your statement with a reasonable argument and they start foaming at the mouth and then list a billion reasons why Jack is fantastic, a list that'll likely include 'he's hot.'
I liked Lost because of the island too, this is why I hate the off-island stuff sooooo much! I mean, it's called Lost because they're Lost on an island, surely?!
April_Rose
Yeah, that's what's annoying - if you fancy him, fair enough, but as a character he's not strong enough to be a singular hero, it doesn't bloody matter what he looks like!
Yeah, I don't mind occasional off-island stuff, if it illuminates stuff, but overall, they should be marooned on the damn island!
Em_J
Totally.
I'm just reading an argument I had with a couple of people on another site about this and it's just making me mad all over again! Their points are stupid, stupid I tell ya!
What I don't like as well, is that if I say I don't like Jack, somebody else'll then start slagging off a character I like, which is so childish it just makes me flip! Anyway, that's not really got anything to do with this apart from the Jack hate part.
I reckon I'm gonna be skipping most of the off-island parts of the new ep, even if they show things that supposedly give us answers, they still bore the b'jesus out of me.
April_Rose
I'll watch the whole episode, but I'll probably complain about it!
Yeah, that is stupid! I mean, you're not just ranting that you hate Jack, even from a writing point of view there's a strong argument about the weaknesses of his character!

This is what I feel like explaining to people, that I understand characterisation so I know what I'm talking about, but half the time they can't see past where I've written 'Jack is a moron' and so won't listen to any reasoning. Even though I'm right. I try to explain it using Charlie as an example, as everybody knows he was my fave, and I explain that his character got absolutely trashed towards the end and I'm glad he was killed off, and now the same should be done for Jack. I don't understand how people can't see how awful he is! Ok he's their fave, but they can see what he's like can't they?! Charlie was my fave, this didn't stop me from seeing how dull and crap he became!
April_Rose
Yeah, Kate was one of my favourite characters and she's become dreadful, it's sad but it's pretty moronic to be so blinded that you can't see where a character has gone downhill!
Em_J
Kate makes me angry too. In fact all the women on Lost give me rage. Apart from Sun, who became the most kick ass towards the end of last season.
April_Rose
Yeah she's developed nicely, though she always showed flashes of potential with the speaking English and stuff...
Em_J
I hate that Keamy was killed too. One of the biggest mistakes of last season I reckon, along with them leaving the island... which the writers obviously now realise as they're trying to get them back.
April_Rose
Yeah, though I'd rather they just got on with getting back while we watched the ones who never left in the first place!
Yeah, there were a few deaths that didn't seem necessary - Keamy and Danielle too I think.
Em_J
It's probably so they can make more room for Jack time, so we can learn more about Jack and how he once accidentally killed a kitten and now carries the terrible guilt around with him.
April_Rose
Yeah, even in season 1 I got fed up with the dull Jack flashbacks really quickly (Especially as there were some really interesting backstories, Kate and Locke in particular)...he's not that complex a character really. He needs to fix stuff, he needs to feel important/needed, he's likely to throw a bit of a hissyfit if he doesn't, and he has issues with his father. That's it.
angelfairy
i totally agree with you both. I'm just not excited for this season and to be honest i don't expect much when it comes back on, maybe we will all be pleasantly surprised.
I'll definitely still watch it but i will tempted to scream if they focues on Jack so much again , he really does get on my last nerve.
Em_J
Yeah that's it. But they still need to make up more crap for him, like the depression and drugs and alcohol and whatever else boring tripe they can think of that they think might make him more interesting but instead just makes me yell at him to jump when he's stood on the bloody bridge.
You know what else I hate?! Flashfowards.
angelfairy
hahaha i have to admit i was hoping that he would jump off the bridge. I was gutted when he didn't
April_Rose
I know, I yelled so much, I think I'd have thrown a party if he'd jumped!
In principle I didn't mind the flashforwards, but I didn't like the way they were used - more Jack melodrama for the most part. I could have lived with it if they were all more like the Ben one, that increasde the mystery a bit.
Yay, angelfairy! Good to know there's another one out there!

Em_J

Nobody will convince me the flashfowards are good. Can't stand them!

I'm in a rotten mood this evening so here goes -
- Lost sucks now, they've turned it into the Jack and Kate show, and if I have to watch him whinge about how crap his life is, or her in flashforward all grizzly eyed and hanging onto Jack's coat-tails then I will put my head through the bloody television.
- Sawyer has turned into a parody of himself, he walks like John Wayne on rollerskates and is nothing but a comedy foil for Hurley and an occasional hero when Jack's not available because he's off saving something.
- They don't bother answering all the mystery questions they've posed, deciding to focus more on the boring soap opera of the jack/Kate/Sawyer boredom, which nobody cares about anymore.
- All the other characters have ben reduced to supporting roles now, with the occasional look-in for people like Sayid and Hurley, but only when they're involved in a Jack/Kate story.
- What's the point in it even being called Lost now if half of them have been found Stupid, bloody stupid.
Em_J
Nicely put! And I agree about Sawyer too, was going to mention him earlier but got carried away with the Jack rage.
April_Rose
You're right about Sawyer, (and the rest of the stuff, obviously) - he was such a strong character at the start and he's gone way downhill. If we get to see him on the island with Locke, Juliet, Daniel, Miles etc then maybe we'll see the good side of him again, but how likely any of that is I don't know

that is a nice rant RWG couldn't of said it better myself
