how did the polar bears get across?

I know polar bears can swim and frequently do in the arctic, but I wonder why the Others wouldn't have encouraged them - perhaps by feeding them - to stay on their own little island, to make sure that they wouldn't pose a danger to any children they might be able to conceive/kidnap. before the plane crash I'm sure the others must have come into contact with them before, as Danielle did. maybe they wanted them to be free, but in that case they're giving more rights to polar bears than to Sawyer and Kate. SHouldn't they really have kept them on the little island or killed them?

Just soemthing I was wondering about.

its a good point, but maybe they just lost control of them

I guess we don't know what distance there is between the two islands and how widespread the bears are. For all we know so far the one that took Eko could be a rogue bear, the Others may be planting the others on the island to freak the losties out - or even out the survival of the fittest laws... for instance . Sawyer killed a polar bear - Sawyer = very fit. Survival of the fittest, heh heh

hehe

The distance looked a long way from where Ben showed it to Sawyer but that may have been misleading, and I suppose Polar bears do swim in the arctic so I'm sure they'd manage tropical waters. You could be right though about the Others planting them to cause problems though, it seems like just the kind of thing they would do - imagine they didn't give it enough drug though and the bear woke up in the submarine!

yeah i watched a programme about polar bears once and sometimes they swim for days without touching land

I think we need to know the reason that the Dharma initiative failed or was abandoned in the first place? maybe if the dharma people all left they let out the caged animals so they wouldnt starve to death?
adthehobbit

yeah - maybe. it just gets very confusing the more you look into it!!

the island is also HUGE

because from season one its like - yer a small island..
then you see where otherville is
and all these hatches that danielle doesnt know about - yet shes been here 16yrs!!

and it all leaves the question, the really big question - bigger than how did the polar bears escape..bigger than when are they gunna get off that island.. but..

HOW THE HELL IS AN ISLAND THAT BIG UNDISCOVERED AND UNKNOWN OF ?!?
dgates07

hi

I think they could have just lost control and they escaped but im not sure or it could be the same island!!
isthisrichard

more likely they didnt escape just released - or escaped in transit
jonny14

I reckon they escaped during the purge.

The bears were probably taken across in a submarine or something or swam. Perhaps they have been left to breed on the 'Lost' Island
hurleys_lost_numbers

Dharma did it, they brought the polar bears over!
splid

They probably swam, they're pretty good swimmers as far as i know.

Bear faced cheek

mabye they were brought to the island when they were just little cubs and one of the kids let it go free cos there wasnt a food delivery and it was gonna get eaten ?
jude

Ok... So you all seem to be realists... No fantasy then?11
