Greatest Hits - Official Discussion threadDiscuss S03E21 - Greatest Hits (Charlie centric) here!
What did you think of the flashbacks?
Were there any great revelations? Any important questions answered?
What was annoying about the episode if anything?

This episode has turned me into a 100% Charlie fan, woo hoo!!!
Nah just kidding
I actually enjoyed this episode a lot. It really built things up well for the finale. Can't wait for next week!

I haven't seen it yet but I don't think willpower is at full strength today, I have a feeling I'll watch the first few parts rather than wait for this evening this time...

Go on give in and watch it!
It was actually one of the episodes I actually liked Charlie, he was remarkably upbeat considering he knew he was going to die. Loved it when he knocked Desmond out!

damn i thought he was gonna die in this eps what hapnd.hes defn not returning for the next season.

I was actually distracted throughout this entire episode so erm. . . can't say much I guess. Dominic Monaghan is too damn hot!!
I wanted Sayid to punch Jack soooooooo badly!! Hate Jack so very, very much. Thank god he wasn't in it much. Thought Charlie's flashback were a bit crappy, except he did look pretty damn fine with the old eyeliner on. And his hair. . . *swoon*
Anyway. . . also loved when he knocked Desmond out, and the little scene between him and Hurley was sooo sweet! I still don't get the whole Charlie and Claire thing though, they're such a crap couple. But why would you volunteer to do something if you know you're gonna die?! Why?! Why?!
|
Xarcabard
|
Because he wanted Claire and Aaron to be rescued. . .probably because he couldn't stand Jack any longer too.
|
Em_J
|
Well I agree with the last one! No, I mean why did it have to be Charlie? They would be rescued if the switch was flipped, that's what I got. So anybody could've done it. But never mind!
|
Xarcabard
|
Yeah it is a bit odd that it HAD to be him. If it were me I'd just let Desmond dive down there and head back to the beach.

Too right! Me an' all!

Liked how Charlie just had to knock Desmond out before doing it though. If he just said "No desmond I'm going to do it" then that would be fine but you could tell he wanted to knock him out for quite a while.

Oh yeah. And he looked mucho fit!

I gave in, I watched it...had to really. Patience and willpower are boring. I'll have to watch it again later, but I can live with that!
i don't get the attraction to Dom at all I'm afraid...
Good episode, and I loved the WTF ending, that was bloody brilliant! Wasn't expecting that at all! What the hell is the story with the women down there? Nice twist anyway!
Wish Sayid had punched Jack as well but liked it when he told him to go be a leader and stop trying to be a bloody hero, I think Sayid is getting mighty sick of Jack being such an arrogant p***k, which is great!
Good to see Alex and Karl again, Rose and Bernard were funny (well Bernard was a tool as usual, but still)
Liked the "greatest hits" theme and Charlie writing his list, the flashbacks were nice and short in general but there were some little gems in there - loved the connection with Nadia! Typical doofus Claire not even noticing the bloody ring, so it's probably going to end up charred or melted or something now.
Interesting too the short scene with Ben and Richard, and between Ben and Alex, lots of tension in Otherville!
Hilarious when Charlie hit Desmond to knock him out, i think a part of him certainly enjoyed doing that! After all the "you're going to die Charlie"'s he must have wanted to hit him for a while!
Set things up nicely for the finale as well. I look forward to next week!

I could list the reasons but I'd be here all night!
I liked the Karl stuff too actually, forgotten about that.

Oh and the Hurley/Charlie hug was cool, I felt so sorry for Hurley when Charlie told him he was too big to come in the boat!

Aww yeah it was soooo sweet!!

Was a bit disappointed not to see any more of Locke after the ending last week, but I'm sure that's not over!

just a few things of interest that may relate to the epi:
just some stuff i found in wikipedia... thought it was interesting in relationship to the epi!!
In 'through the looking glass', there are many mirror themes, including opposites, time running backwards, and so on.
Chess
Whereas the first book has the deck of cards as a theme, this book is loosely based on a game of chess, played on a giant chessboard with fields for squares. Most main characters met in the story are represented by a chess piece, with Alice herself being a pawn. However, the chess game described cannot be carried out legally due to a move where white doesn't move out of check (a list of moves is included - note that a young child might make this error due to inexperience). The looking-glass world is divided into sections by brooks, with the crossing of each brook usually signifying a notable change in the scene and action of the story: the brooks represent the divisions between squares on the chessboard, and Alice crossing them signifies the advancing of her piece one square. The sequence of moves (white and red) is not always followed, however, which goes along with the book's mirror image reversal theme as noted by mathematician and author Martin Gardner
we get into the concept of time again... and things that are backwards... what's happening on this island??
a game of chess where moves are not always sequential... where we have the black and white theme running... on the island, who is/are the pawn/s and who is/are the ones in control??
the brooks are the divisions between squares... does this go along with fractured time on the island... the clock that swings out in peices and returns again? does this go with moving ahead in life... making different moves and advancing rather than falling back or faqlling off the board??
this part facinated me...but wait!
Alice ponders what the world is like on the other side of a mirror, and to her surprise, is able to pass through to experience the alternate world. She discovers a book with looking-glass poetry, "Jabberwocky," which she can read only by holding it up to a mirror. Upon leaving the house, she enters a garden, where the flowers speak to her and mistake her for a flower. There, Alice also meets the Red Queen, who offers a throne to Alice if she just moves to the eighth rank in a chess match.
an alternate world??? this is interesting... is that what the LOSTies are in? and 'jabberwocky'... this gets a section by itself...
who is the red queen on the island? who is our alice? locke seems to have been offered a throne... jack had been too...
now, on to jabberwocky...

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.
'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
[edit] Glossary
The first verse originally appeared in Mischmasch - a periodical which Carroll wrote and edited for the amusement of his family - claiming to be a piece of Anglo-Saxon poetry.
Several of the words in the poem are of Carroll's own invention, many of them portmanteaux. In the book, the character of Humpty Dumpty gives definitions for the nonsense words in the first stanza. In later writings, Lewis Carroll explained several of the others. The rest of the nonsense words were never explicitly defined by Carroll, who even claimed that he himself did not know what some of them meant. An extended analysis of the poem is given in the book The Annotated Alice, including writings from Carroll about how he formed some of his idiosyncratic words. A few words that Carroll invented in this poem (namely "chortled", "galumphing", "frabjous") have entered the English language. The word jabberwocky itself is sometimes used to refer to nonsense language.
Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
Bandersnatch – A swift moving creature with snapping jaws. Capable of extending its neck.[1]
remind you of any kind of smokie being???
Borogove – A thin shabby-looking bird with its feathers sticking out all round, something like a live mop.[2] The initial syllable of borogove is pronounced as in borrow, rather than as in worry.[3]
does this say 'hurley bird' to anyone?
Brillig – Four o'clock in the afternoon: the time when you begin broiling things for dinner.[2][4]
Chortled - Combination of chuckle and snort.[2]
Frabjous - Probably a blend of fair, fabulous, and joyous .[5]
Frumious – Combination of "fuming" and "furious."[3]
Galumphing - Perhaps a blend of "gallop" and "triumphant." (Used to describe a way of "trotting" down hill, while keeping one foot further back than the other. This enables the Galumpher to stop quickly)[5]
Gimble – To make holes like a gimlet.[2]
Gyre – To go round and round like a gyroscope.[2][6] However, Carroll also wrote in Mischmasch that it meant to scratch like a dog.
have the LOSTies done this enough on the island??
Jabberwock – A creature with jaws that bite, claws that catch, and eyes of flame. It probably lives in the woods, which is where the hero finds it, and can travel at considerable (whiffling) speed, and is also known for the burbling noise it makes. While we cannot assume that Tenniel's illustration is what Carroll originally envisioned, Carroll did defend the illustration when there was talk of removing it from the book. [7]
more smokie??
Jubjub – A desperate bird that lives in perpetual passion.[1]
me.. or hmmm... who's passionate ion the island? des??
Manxome – Combination of "monstrous" and "fearsome", or possibly "manly" and "buxom". Possibly related to the Manx cat.
one could be smokie the other hurley...
Mimsy – Combination of "miserable" and "flimsy."[2]
Mome – Possibly short for "from home," meaning that the raths had lost their way.[2]
'nuff said
Outgrabe (past tense; present tense outgribe) – Something between bellowing and whistling, with a kind of sneeze in the middle.[2][8]
ben when he is speaking?
Rath – A sort of green pig.[2] (See Origin and structure for further details.)
Slithy – Combination of "slimy" and "lithe."[2] The i is long, as in writhe.[3]
Toves – A combination of a badger, a lizard, and a corkscrew. They are very curious looking creatures which make their nests under sundials. They live on cheese.[2] Pronounced so as to rhyme with groves.[3]
the underside of time seems rather dangerous...
Tulgey - Applied to a wood(s); (usually interpreted as) thick, dense and dark; also fig.
Uffish – A state of mind when the voice is gruffish, the manner roughish, and the temper huffish.[9]
jack?
Vorpal - Assumed to mean "deadly" or "extremely sharp", or perhaps to imply that the blade has magical properties.
this could go so many ways...
Wabe – The grass plot around a sundial. It is called a "wabe" because it goes a long way before it, and a long way behind it, and a long way beyond it on each side.[2]
what surrounds time?

Sorry, I thought there were some good points in there but I haven't had the energy to read through it carefully! Still, plenty to consider after tomorrow when we'll have months without Lost, more time for theories then I suppose!
