I dont think Ben is actually Alex's father. Maybe after taking her he just brought her up to believe he was her real dad and she doesn't know anything about her mother.
As for what she does... who knows? Maybe nothing. Maybe she tries to figure out a way to get off the Island... I dunno.

is she really french? her accent's not very french but then most of the non-american characters in the show have unconvincing accents. has she ever referred to herself as french or is it just an assumption based on the radio transmission

Well we've been told several times over that she's Danielles daughter (who's french). She doesn't have an accent as she's lived on the island since she was a baby, and she hasn't been around her mother, so it wouldn't of caught on either.
It doesn't really make sense for Ben to be her real father either, because it was Danielle that caught him.

Other than the fact that it is mentioned that Alex is Danielle's daughter, the two also bear a great resemblence, don't you guys think so?

Yeah, I think they cast actors who look similar deliberately so we'd all be on the edge of our seats and jumping at the sight of Alex, sure she's Danielle's daughter
As for the accent, Mira Furlan, who plays Danielle, is actually Czech or Slovakian or something, she's from central Europe so that's why she doesn't sound French, the accent from that area would be harsher than a French one, and Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse said in an interview or a podcast, can't remember which, that that's one of the things that won't be explained, why the French woman sound Czechoslovakian.
