Football - Transfer gossipThought this deserved a thread of its own as the newspapers are having great fun at the moment speculating on who is going where and for how much, often just to fill pages and often it's purely fictional.
One thing I saw today (on teletext, as I don't buy papers except on a sunday) was that Juventus are going to offer Liverpool French striker David Trezuget as an exchange for Peter Crouch. I just thought this was hilarious. It's from the daily mail...
Also speculated upon was Darren Bent going to West ham - apparently for £18m! I know he's a good young striker but that seems a bit of a ridiculous price tag to me!
Anyone hear anything interesting about who is supposedly signing for which club over the summer?
Xarcabard
Middlesbrough have agreed terms with Turkey Striker Sanli Tuncay. A very good striker, too good for Boro imo.
Sunderland have bid for Preston striker David Nugent. A very good striker, too good for the mackems imo
April_Rose
I'll be hoping Sunderland do well next year as Roy Keane is the manager! When Mick McCarthy was in charge though I was screaming for their relegation, I hate him! Don't really care about the club as such!
Nugent has been talked about a lot over the last year, probably be good for him to get a year in the premiership!
Also regards Trezuget, according to the mirror I think apparently Wenger wants to bring him to arsenal as it'll be more likely that Henry will stay then....he's been linked with English clubs every year for ages now, Chelsea were reported to be buying him last year and the year before, I'm not overly impressed by him so I'm glad they didn't, but wouldn't really care if he ended up at Liverpool or Arsenal.
Xarcabard
I hate Roy Keane more than any other ex player and I hate Sunderland more than any other club so I'll look forward for the toon getting 6 points against them next season.
I actually think Trezuget would be good in the premiership. Tall, strong and quick, he would cause problems for many sides.
April_Rose
Why do you hate Roy Keane so much?
Xarcabard
He was a good player but overated in his years past the champions league winning side, he was a thug that used to cause trouble and he sometimes tried to end careers of other players by purposly getting them injured. He tried to punch wor Al making himself look like a fool afterwards and whenever you hear him speak he just sounds like a boring miserable git. Good enough reason?
April_Rose
I can't really disagree with any of that but I still think he's a legend and I continue to delude myself that Ireland could have been in the World cup final of 2002 if Mick McCarthy and the FAI weren't such unbelievable w*****s!
I always hated United so I never really cared what he did for them but when he was playing well for Ireland he was a legend, he gave it his all and he was a fantastic captain, really inspirational and ambitious! I long for the day when he's the Ireland manager!
He's not that much of a miserable git actually though, that's just the Cork accent makes him sound like that! And he isn't too fond of the media which doesn't help, he talks more to journalists over here than in the UK so we see a different side of him.
Jenny*
i hate roy keane also - he actually admitted in his autobiography that he purposely bad-tackled a city player during a derby, which costs the city player is career and dream - he should of been banned himself
April_Rose
He was banned for a good while for that! I know, I can understand why you'd hate him for that, like I say I wasn't a fan of him as a United player but for Ireland he was fantastic.
Jenny*
i never really followed him much for ireland, i just remember that one incident where he got sent home - or did he go volenterly?
April_Rose
he walked out, but McCarthy was on the verge of telling him to go so he got in first - he was right to do it too, much as it kills me that we could have done really well in that tournament if he'd been there the FAI were messing about, they're a bunchy of unprofessional b*******s, they screwed up with the facilities and when he stood up and said that it wasn't good enough they tried to make him look stupid.
It's still pretty complicated over here, some people hate him for leaving but others agree he was right to complain and MCCarthy and the FAI should have backed down.
April_Rose
Well there's talk that Robben has turned down Chelsea's offer of a new contract and wants to speak to Real Madrid...let him i say, bye bye Robben, don't let the door hit you on the arse on the way out...
Other suggestions include Liverpool buying Benayoun from West Ham, Spurs getting Darren bent after he turned down a move to West Ham and Defoe leaving if Bent comes in.
Sunderland and Villa are chasing Bolton keeper Jaskelainen, and West Ham and Newcastle are still being linked with pretty much everyone and anyone...
Xarcabard
Actually Newcastle hasn't really been strongly linked with anyone new for the past week as far as I could see. Its actually a bit concerning for me because I think we need defenders in ASAP.
April_Rose
According to teletext they're being linked with Kanoute, and yesterday they were linked with some striker in france, can't remember the name, it's not strong links though, just the papers making stuff up I think.
Yeah we beat you to Ben Haim and Newcastle sure do need some defenders!
Xarcabard
I know, gutted about the Ben Haim deal. I think he wanted to come but the lure of champions league football made him go to Chelsea.
April_Rose
Yeah, understandable in fairness to him, but at Newcastle he'd have been guaranteed a place, at Chelsea he's cover for Terry or Carvalho, I'm glad we got him though, after last season showed how much we need cover when one of them is out!
I'd say Sam has a few tricks up his sleeve yet, he'll probably unearth some defender no one has ever heard of before but turns out to be brilliant.
Xarcabard
Heres hoping!
Though I am happy with Viduka and Barton signing, I want us to get at least a couple of players that would top those deals.
Really annoyed about the Owen saga, if he wants to go then he should get it over with so that we can look for a replacement straight away. Still think he is going nowhere though.
April_Rose
He'd be a complete w****r if he left in my opinion, and to be honest I don't think any of the bigger clubs want him, but yeah, he shoudl just say one way or the other if he wants to leave or he wants to commit his future to Newcastle and get it sorted. To leave it hanging is worse than just saying if he does want to go cos as you say, Sam would need time to bring in a replacement.
Xarcabard
He should commit his future to the club and sign a two year extension for the two he's missed. Its not fault he's been injured but with the crap he's putting us through at the moment he better take action soon.
Jenny*
he'll probably get injured again though knowing his luck
Xarcabard
Talk today about Alan Smith joining Newcastle for 3.5m (great price) from the mail and the mirror.
Also talk of Owen going to City and Martins going to Juventus which made me LMAO! Why the hell would we want to sell those players? Martins has 4 years left on his contract is very happy at the club and Owens clause isin't activated by City as they aren't a champions league side. Even if they get Sven, Owens hardly going to want to go there (no offense to city because I like their club) and we're hardly likely to sell unless we can recoup more than the 17m we paid for him.
Seems like some reporters have started taking drugs, the dafties!
Jenny*
i think they always have xarca! [not that i would say no to michel owen . . . ]
i really hope city don't end up with sven, i don't think the fans would approve at all and can't really see him making a big improvement which is what we need
Xarcabard
He is the most opposite person you could get to Stuart Pearce thats for sure.
Jenny*
yeah - there will be no more screaming on the sidelies or any passion at all
Xarcabard
Yeah you'd be lucky if he just stood up.
Jenny*
u got that right!!
April_Rose
Yeah I was amazed at the talk of selling Martins, I think you guys are right, they're off their heads on something! Seems like the guy with the bid in for City (i'm not even going to attempt to spell his name) has his heart set on Sven - the salaries mentioned in the various papers were a bit ridiculous too, from £2m to £8m depending on which paper, that's money that would be better spent on players!
Oh and it's not gossip as it's gone through already, but Henry sold to Barcelona - bye bye arsenal! There's a champion's league spot up for grabs next season now I'd say! And for 16m? Can't believe they let him go for that!
Xarcabard
4th position for Newcastle this season then!
Though Arsenal could be after Owen or Martins as a replacement
April_Rose
Maybe but there's speculation of Wenger leaving Arsenal to go to either Barca or Real Madrid himself, and if he left Champions league or not they'd never be able to attract top players! If he stays he'll probably try to buy someone young and unheard of (and cheap) so letting Henry go for £16m doesn't seem so ridiculous.
Xarcabard
I'm surprised Henry went first actually. Was expecting Wenger to then him afterwards. One of the reasons Henry left was because he thought Wenger was going so we'll have to wait and see.
April_Rose
If I was an Arsenal fan I'd be majorly pissed off though - what he said about leaving cos Wenger's future was uncertain basically sounded like he was saying he didn't give a crap about the club or the fans, his only loyalty was to his manager.
Xarcabard
True and most Arsenal fans I know were really p'd off because they though it was rubbish rumours. My sister's boyfriend is an arsenal fan and he's gutted.
April_Rose
Laughed my head off this morning at the football gossip page on teletext - apparently Newcastle offered Owen to Liverpool in exchange for Bellamy and Riise, and it was turned down. Just thought it was hilarious, the kind of thing people come up with in a creative writing class...
Xarcabard
I know, I heard that too. Some people come up with such terrible stuff, absolutely hilarious. Been talking about that with a mate today, we'd have Riise but Bellamy? you got to be kidding.
April_Rose
I know, after all the history there? I just thought it was ridiculous, like the journalist that came up with it only got sent to do a football article to cover someone else's holiday or something, and just picked a few random names and knew nothing about the players! I think you and Jen were right when you said they've been on some kind of substances recently!
Xarcabard
Well its been a cracking past 3 days in the football word for Newcastle.
Friday - Smith Joining for 3.5m, Man U saying no to their bids for Brown and Silvestre (Mirror and Mail) David Rozenhal having medical on Monday (which is true) Owen possibly signing for Man City.
Saturday - Newcastle after Bent for 16m and Kanoute for 6.8m. Owen and Martins both lined up as replacements for Thierry Henry.
Today - Newcastle offering Owen to liverpool for Riise and Bellamy, whats more the bid is rejected.
It must be lovely to get paid to make up these things.
April_Rose
I know!!!! I'd love a job like that! Just write a pile of crap and get it published and make a fortune! gah!
Xarcabard
Lots of stories today say Newcastle are getting Geremi on a free.
The only time I've really seen him is as a right midfielder for Boro scoring some cracking free kicks. I know AR is a chelsea fan, what do you think or Geremi as a player and most importantly as a right back?
April_Rose
I prefer him as a midfielder to be honest, but he's certainly a damn good free kick taker whether he plays right back or right midfield!
he did ok at right back for us last year, but he's a bit too forward-thinking so he doesn't always get back in time is the only problem with him there, there was no consistency with who played there for us last season though so he never had like 10 games in a row to settle into the position, if he got that he might get the hang of it more.
Xarcabard
Yeah I'm worried about him defensively. Milner has made the right hand side his own and even if he's not playing or is switched to the left, theres still dyer and Solano to put at right midfield.
We do need a good right back though, he just seems the same type of player as Solano. Good at freekicks and can cover at right back but its not his ideal position.
Still decent on a free if the stories are true.
April_Rose
Yeah, that would be a good deal, he is a good player and like I say, if he gets a load of games in that position in a row he'll probably be grand, Chelsea's defence was all over the place last season so it's not the best measure of his skills in that position.
Xarcabard
I'm hoping we get him now but he wouldn't be my first choice tbh. Can't go too wrong with a free transfer though.
April_Rose
I'm laughing so hard I can hardly type, LOVE the new avatar!
Yeah, if he's free and not on that much money he's a good catch, and if he doesn't work out at least you're not down a fortune, plus there's more money for a centre half and left back...
Xarcabard
Thanks!
If he does sign that would be him, viduka, barton and rozenhal for a combined 9 ish million. Considering we got 7m for Parker that would mean we had spent 2m, which is good business I reckon.
April_Rose
Bloody right, you could do with a few more players but there's plenty of time yet for that!
Xarcabard
Yeah and Mike Ashley the new owner hasn't even put any of HIS money in yet that I know, he's too busy trying to do a complete take over.
Finally times to be excited for Newcastle and now Man City (though I'm sure they wouldn't have wanted Sven there)
April_Rose
Yeah....maybe Sven will surprise people (i doubt it though) - even so, they're bound to do better if they get some players in....
The Newcastle takeover is nearly complete is it? Or is it done?
Xarcabard
He's the majority share holder now he's just trying to get the rest of the shares to make it a private company again. He's pretty close over 80% the last I heard. Once he gets 90% the other 10% are forced to sell their shares.
April_Rose
Ah right, I never understand how that stuff works! He can start putting his money in already thought can't he?
Xarcabard
Yeah but because he wants to take the club over completely he's actually using all his money in that at the moment. Its only right I suppose.
April_Rose
Yeah, I suppose that makes sense, and there's plenty of new players coming in even without his money yet as you say, he probably sees it as a long term thing rather than something to throw money at immediately and waste it as so many chairmen have done at various clubs in the past.
Xarcabard
He'll be giving us 100m over the next 3 seasons according to sources which'll do nicely. Maybe even more if we can qualify for the Uefa Cup or the Champions League.
April_Rose
Yeah, well qualifying for them provides its own money as well, and like I say, I think Arsenal are going to have some troubles, so fourth spot should be up for grabs!
Xarcabard
Yep, its a good battle for those top six positions with spurs, everton, villa, west ham, bolton and newcastle all probably contenders for european positions so none of the top four can slack off either.
April_Rose
Yeah, I think the top two will be the same (though hopefully the other way around ) this year anyway, though Liverpool keep threatening to do well but fall away again.
I think Bolton will fall away now into mid table to be honest, but the others will do well and there's bound to be a surprise package this year as well, like Reading last year and West ham the year before, maybe not one of the clubs that come up but someone is bound to over achieve.
Xarcabard
Fingers crossed it'll be the toon!
Don't honestly think so tbh, I'd be happy with a top half finish.
April_Rose
Aim low so you'll be delighted if they do better than you expect kind of thing? I think they shoudl aim for Uefa cup personally, and with Sam in charge and better players than he had at Bolton I don't think that's unrealistic.
Xarcabard
Sometimes the expectation levels get stupidly high at Newcastle because of the passion of the fans. But as long as we show an improvement I'll be happy, I'd be delighted if we got into Europe I really would!
Love European matches!
April_Rose
Yeah you're lucky too, you get to go to them! I'm determined to get over to see a premiership game this season though...
April_Rose
Reports are linking United with Tevez....boohiss, I'd like Chelsea to sign him to be honest but if they don't I really don't want him going to United! Hopefully it's just rumours....
Xarcabard
I'd love Tevez at Newcastle
For some reason I got excited when I heard Tevez going to United because yesterday it was said we are trying to make a signing that will shock the football world. Nevermind though, wrong United
April_Rose
Sorry! I tend to refer to Man U as United, it's how people here talk I suppose....most people here are either Man U or Liverpool fans.
I'd much rather Tevez at Newcastle than Man U! ....I know Chelsea aren't going to sign him as we already have Drogba and Shevchenko and Pizzarro and Kalou, but I hate the idea of him going there all the same....
Got to slag off my cousin-in-law last night about the money man u are spending this summer, he's been going on for years about Chelsea buying the title and Man U are spending a fortune this year!
Xarcabard
I actually wasn't referring to you AR I was referring to a title I saw on the text.
Was getting myself over excited, which is easy to do as a Newcastle Fan
April_Rose
Ah ok,
The city of eternal optimism eh?
Xarcabard
Yeah
Its great though, its such a football city.
April_Rose
Yeah I get a sense of that even watching MOTD, the ground seems one of the best in the UK.
Football isn't so big here, the local team is a bit useless and there's Gaelic games to compete with, plus everyone's a Celtic supporter as well as either Man U or 'pool and I don't go in for all that sport/political BS that goes with the scottish clubs....plenty of people watch games on tv but there's no real local football buzz, we only get that when Donegal are doing well in Gaelic.
Xarcabard
Everyone in Newcastle is bound to be a toon supporter. You can go up to a stranger and have a conversation about Newcastle very easily. One club city and great stadium.
I actually know about 7 people who live near or in London who are all toon fans and a hell of a lot of Chelsea fans.
April_Rose
That sounds pretty cool...I hardly know any other Chelsea fans, as everyone here is into Man U or Liverpool pretty much everyone I know hates them! Don't know any real newcastle supporters either but most people here wish them well cos Shay is from just up the road.
Xarcabard
Its because my Uncle (more like a brother to me though) lives in basingstoke and I manage to get down there now and again. Theres a lot of Chelsea, Reading and Newcastle fans in Basingstoke, a few Man U fans too.
Also got a few friends living in London thats similar.
Xarcabard
Strong reports today say that Deco will be having a medical for Newcastle later this week. One to look out for, he's a quality player.
April_Rose
Seriously? I haven't had time to look at football headlines yet! That woudl be great for you if it's true, he's an excellent player!
Xarcabard
Yeah it seems like it, Deco is in the last year of his contract and apparently Barca don't want him no more as they are apparently after someone else (maybe Lampard). Its even on an offical Newcastle site thats hardly ever wrong. Have to wait and see, looks interesting though I'd be chuffed if we get him.
April_Rose
Yeah, that would be a hell of a deal, him and Barton would be some midfield! I hope Lampard doesn't go to Barca though....
Xarcabard
Well fingers crossed, its on quite a few sites including a lot of spanish ones. Not on sky sports yet though. Have a feeling its too good to be true
Found it hilarious over the weekend how the papers say Sven has snubbed Owen and Beckham. Makes it sound like they wanted to join him at city when they probably haven't even considered it.
Another hilarious thing is that a hell of a lot of people still don't realise that Owen's release clause only applies to the top four sides. So many stupid reports saying that clubs outside the top four are going to activate the clause in his contract, its madness.
April_Rose
It's only Champion's league clubs isn't it? Yeah I laughed at that yesterday, why would they want to play for Sven again? Why would anyone want to sign for him at all???
Xarcabard
Yep the English Champion's league clubs. None of them are actually linked its other teams
Can't imagine too many English players will want to work under Sven again, he should be able to get a few foreignors though.
April_Rose
Yeah he did well in Portugal and Italy ages back I suppose. I can't take him seriously myself, can't imagine anyone really keen to sign for him. He'll probably sort out City defensively but I can't see them scoring a pile of goals every week with him at the helm.
Xarcabard
Yeah me neither.
I can see them as a steady unit but hardly an exciting team to watch.
April_Rose
Yeah, same as England when he was in charge....well, not much has changed there! I hope Chelsea are a bit better to watch this season too.
Xarcabard
They just signed Malouda didn't they? Good player, does it mean SWP or Robben leaving though?
April_Rose
Hopefully Robben! SWP has more heart at least, Robben hasn't played like he wants to be there in over a year. I don't know a lot about Malouda but hopefully he'll be a good addition.
Xarcabard
Heinze linked with Newcastle too
I love it when the transfer window opens and you get to hear all this stuff.
April_Rose
heinze would be a good signing for you guys too I'd say.
Yeah, it keeps me going through the post/pre season when there's no games on!
Xarcabard
Sometimes I like it better than when the season starts, Newcastle are usually terrible starters in the league.
April_Rose
What happened to the optimism?
Xarcabard
I said "usually". This year is going to be different!
April_Rose
So, Chelsea got Malouda, Robben is reported to be having talks with Real Madrid, Bellamy went to West ham and Nugent is meant to have agreed a deal with Portsmouth - busy day today, I'm looking forward to having a read of the gossip tomorrow morning!
Xarcabard
One of the first things I do when I wake up is read the text for transfer news. Love the transfer talk just wish they got rid of the transfer window and that stupid new system for loans.
April_Rose
What loan system?
Yeah I tend to read the teletext gossip pages while I'm having my morning coffee, it's always great to have a laugh first thing in the morning!
Xarcabard
For loans now teams have to loan that player for the WHOLE season and their club are unable to call that player back. Its basically a short term transfer, so stupid!
April_Rose
I didn't even know that, seems a bit silly - they should really sort out the rules they already have and make them work right before they introduce a pile of new ones....
I see Real Madrid signed Saviola on a free from Barca as well and Liverpool are meant to have agreed a fee with West Ham for Benayoun.
April_Rose
Well Portsmouth have signed Nugent so that's one saga that's over at least....
I saw on text earlier that Arsenal are still being linked with Martins....but then there's still rumours over Wenger's future as well so not much seems to be happening there really.
Xarcabard
I think it was mentioned again in the Daily Mail, though I can't see it happening now.
April_Rose
I think I read a rumour last week that Wenger had until friday this week to sign a new contract or Arsenal were going to say byebye to him? Even if he does stay on for another year till his contract runs out the arsenal board might not want to let him spend major money if he's not going to be there long term.
Xarcabard
Owen has finally said he's staying at Newcastle yet it barely reaches the back page, I think reporters are quiet bored with the saga over his future tbh. That and they are so pro London teams.
He should sign a two year extension to his contract and disgard the release clause if he's really commited I reckon. Though he says the club has massive potental at the moment and he wants to help us realise it, which is what I like to hear.
April_Rose
Yeah, I heard that this morning, I suppose it's a step in the right direction as you say, if not a total indication of commitment, better than saying nothing.
April_Rose
Looks like Robben is off to Madrid - bye bye, don't let the door hit your arse on the way out I say! He's a good player but he hasn't been interested in playing for Chelsea in the last two seasons, maybe the injuries demoralised him but he doesn't seeem like he wants to be there so it's time for a change, there's talk of bringing in Drenthe though so I don't know what that means for SWP, I'd like to see him stay personally and given some games but he keeps being linked with Villa, Spurs and West Ham plus a return to City.
Other recent transfer gossip seems to suggest that Martins turned down Arsenal, that Fabregas opted to stay there instead of go to Real Madrid, Man City are being linked with loads of players on the continent, most of whom I've never heard of, Cannavaro turned down Chelsea (which is fair enough, he's good but he's getting old and we have three great defenders now) and Chelsea are being linked alternately with Chimbonda of Spurs and Alves of Sevilla in the search for a right-back.
Jenny*
im all for Shaun back at City obviously!
April_Rose
Transfer gossip will be heating up again now with the window due to open in January....Chelsea are being linked with every striker that's scored more than two goals this season as far as I can see Plenty of teams will be looking for cover for the African nations Cup though, and there's bound to be a few interesting deals!
Jenny*
isn't there a rumor saying that they want anelka?? or is that another club ...
