Information about the Earth’s protective field

The Earth’s magnetosphere currently protects the world from the effects of the Sun’s plasma called the solar wind. The point at which the magnetosphere interacts with the Earth is at both the North and South Poles. These two zones are called the auroral ovals, as below:

Hundreds of thousands of years ago

Due to a possible planetary disaster during this extensive period, a third auroral oval of an unknown nature formed on the planet in the south-pacific. The effects within this third auroral oval ranged from:

An incredibly strong electromagnetic field which enveloped a small zone in the south-pacific.

Normal planetary magnetic effects were distorted (if there were compasses back then, they would spin around, maybe point in the wrong direction).

The gravity-based drag on the oceans from our lunar companion, the Moon, was altered so that the swelling and calming of the oceans was different to outside of the field.

Enhanced and violent volcanism.

Thousands of years ago

Due to the high level of volcanism, an island formed from the build up of cooling lava materials. The end result was a contrast of high mountainous areas and low-level coastal valleys.

12,000 BC to 10,000 BC

For the ancient mariners who traversed the world in ancient times, this mysterious island was stumbled upon and explored. The mystical and powerful nature of the island was quickly realized which stirred a religious and shamanistic focus towards its dark secrets.

Probably at one point an enigmatic shrine was placed on the island by these ancient of people, allowing them to study the mysteries of the island, but I believe something terrible happened there…something so drastically evil that they forever left the shores of this dark place. A statue was erected on its one shore which directed its gaze outwards towards the horizon, beckoning everyone to not enter that evil domain.

I will save my thoughts on the power of this island in that ancient time and place, and on the reason for the four toes to this statue, saving these ideas for one of my next parts to this complete theory.

Late 1800's AD

In the 1880's, a former ship captain and business entrepreneur Magnus Hanso was the owner of a British trading group The New World Sea Traders, a prominent company in the 1880s, with connections to the slave trade. His organisation managed ports 18 though 27 in Portsmouth, Britain, and consisted of 15 vessels, three of them being slaving ships. The slave trade had been abolished in Europe and the United States during this time, but Indian Ocean slavery was still very active during the 1880's. One of these slaving ships was the Black Rock slave-trading vessel, with a crew of 40 men and an unknown number of slaves. When not captaining vessels, it is known that Magnus Hanso resided in his posh London manor. (Information gathered from The Lost Experience)

1882
Magnus Hanso liquidated all assets belonging to the New World Sea Traders and sold the fleet (15 vessels) to the East Ocean Trade Group. This purchasing conglomerate converted these slave and military vessels into legitimate trading vessels. This didn't stop Magnus as he continued to command several voyages and trades throughout the years, and continued an active role in the underground slave trade.

The Black Rock left dock 23 from Portsmouth on a voyage that would end in Africa to exchange mined Indonesian and Papua New Guinea gold for more slaves, but it is known that the ship was already full of slaves (why?).

Commanded by Magnus and his son, the Black Rock spent several years resolving a gold mining operation in the South Indian Ocean. During this period I believe that Magnus visited the Indonesia archipelago, specifically the small island of Bali, which was peopled by the descendants of a prehistoric race.

In the mid 1800's, there occurred a series of colonial wars on the island of Bali. These wars were extremely fierce, with the entire royal court of the Raja, women and children, plunged into battle armed with kris and spears. It seemed that the royal court of the Raja felt that the secrets they wished to control were so absolutely important, they preferred to die in battle than to be taken captive.

During his stay here Magnus must have learnt information regarding the Hindu concept of Dharma (Sanskrit, meaning Natural Law or Reality, and was considered the Way of the Higher Truths), and also where he discovered or traded for an ancient mariners map used in prehistory.

The ship then sailed to Papua New Guinea and traded items there.

Upon its departure it was noted that the Black Rock sailed away from port in an Easterly direction, rather than continuing West to Africa.

To the outer world, the Black Rock disappeared, never to be seen again.

The Black Rock was holding many slaves and a stock of dynamite during this voyage. Magnus' son probably functioned as a specialist with an extensive knowledge of the newly invented explosive ‘dynamite’. This might have been his function on the ship.

It has been verified by Rachel Black of the Lost Experience videos that Alvar Hanso has a history to his family background in the slave trade, and also in the shipping industry. This would verify and validify that Magnus was actually the owner of the vessel, and the ship was not a prison ship, but a slave ship. This would also mean that his function onboard was not directly involved with the explosives.

They were attempting to travel to the mystical island, using an ancient mariners map from prehistory. It was a closely guarded Hindu secret that the island held sacred powers and had the secret of immortality hidden deep within its dark forests. It was also known that built within the 300 ft statue were clues to the secrets of the island, placed inside by the ancients. Others had tried to find the island and discover the clues to immortality and total power, but none had returned.

On this voyage the Black Rock hit an incredibly powerful storm that threw them off course, and affected their navigation abilities. Once the storm subsided, they came upon the island they were searching for. It seemed that their bad luck had somehow guided them to their goal…
We can theorize that the island fluctuates the ocean levels by a certain height depending on the attraction of the moon at the time. Let’s say that when the Black Rock approached the island the ocean level was much higher, so they traveled much farther inland and made port off the side of one of the inner hill ranges, while the crew went inland. This was the ill-regarded area labeled by Danielle Rousseau as the Dark Territory.

At some point the sea level dramatically lowered again, beaching the Black Rock and stranding them on the island, as shown below.

Note: This same effect happened in a season 1 episode (cannot remember which episode) where the wreckage of Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 was engulged by the ocean and dragged out to sea, and the Losties had to run further up shore so as not to be caught in the dragging action of the waves.

Eventually the crew of the Black Rock made their way to the statue and, using their explosives, they destroyed it in their attempt to find its secrets.

It is impossible to determine the story that might have occurred back then and what they had discovered, but I feel two items appear to be apparent. Magnus and his son discovered parts of the secret of extending life (but not the entire equation), and at some point in time Magnus Hanso died on the island and was laid to rest near the Black Rock, which is scribbled by Kelvin on the inside of the Swan station blast door.

Prior to his death, Magnus’s son found a way to escape the island and the effects of the field surrounding the island, probably from secrets discovered. He took with him the secrets to extending life, and held onto this knowledge providing it to his descendants in the outside world.

Circa 1900 AD

During the late 1930’s, the grand-son of Magnus, Alvar Hanso, first made his mark during the Second World War, providing munitions to various resistance movements.

After the war, Alvar became the leading supplier of high-technology armaments to NATO, being a manufacturer of weapons and munitions. Explosives and munitions were probably the family business for generations. At this point in time I don’t believe the secret knowledge had been passed down to him. This is the time where he probably made his business connections with two large groups at the time, Paik-Heavy Industries and the Widmore Corporation (more below).

It is very possible that this secret knowledge was eventually inherited by Alvar who immediately founded the Hanso Foundation to determine the feasibility of this new information.

Alvar Hanso is the progenitor, CEO and founder of the Hanso Foundation which focuses on the extension of life, enhancement of the genome, and the creation of an utopian society. His continual focus has been to improve humanity and the support of pure scientific research for the betterment of the entire race. He is able to work towards this end via his large network of companies.

At this time, Alvar created the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute to focus on studying the various mental ailments in the hopes of helping humanity.

1950's
The East Ocean Trade Group was bought by the Hanso Group and renamed to the Allied Copenhagen Marine Merchants. Alvar now had returned his father's original business under the Hanso name.

1960
Being a middle-aged man by the early 1960’s, Alvar was convinced that the mysterious island contained the rest of the needed information that could unlock the complete secret of extending life and enhancing the human genome. The only problem was that he lacked the location of the island as the technology did not currently exist to find it.

1962
The United States and Soviet Union came perilously close to initiating a nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis which would have devastated the world. From this possible catastrophe, both superpowers decided to combine their efforts to ensure that such an event would not occur again. Scientists and strategists from around the globe stepped forward to work on a plan to ensure humanity's continued survival.

At the request of the United Nations, the Italian mathematician Enzo Valenzetti devised a complicated algorithm that was capable of predicting the exact date of the extinction of the human race.

Using com***tional analysis via state-of-the-art computer systems normally produce 'non-skewed' generic and logical results...but not the correct results needed to predict future apocalyptic events. Enzo Valenzetti realized that the act of applying the mind to the process (adding thought to the equation) produces more accurate and advanced results. Therefore the Valenzetti com***tions required an extra element...that of the interference produced by the mind monitoring the process which acts as a sort of interference and modification to the result.

Therefore the Valenzetti equation could only be mathematically resolved accurately via the use of humans with the extraordinary mental ability to perform extremely advanced numerical calculations, i.e. autistic savants. Another factor was time. Resolving the complete algorithm took years of intense and unbroken com***tional analysis via the savants.

It has been verified by Rachel Black of the Lost Experience videos that the Valenzetti equation requires the use of autistic savants to accurately perform the predictions. Wikipedia describles an autistic savant as: a person with extraordinary mental abilities, often in numerical calculation, but sometimes in art or music. These skills are often, yet not exclusively, associated with mental retardation, and low I.Q.

With his vast resources, unlimited funds and access, Alvar provided the backing needed to ensure the Valenzetti equation would be accurately resolved.

The Mathematical Forecasting Initiative was born. Its goal was to more accurately predict future events and trends by analysing current states and creating mathematical models.

Secretly within the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute, and another location, the Vik Institute, Alvar setup a small area that could be used to hold the various autistic savants needed for the calculations.

The basis of the Valenzetti equation was the determination of core environmental and human factors that represented the various possible ways that humanity could extinguish itself.

Information about humanity was gathered for each of these factors which were then placed into the overall equation.

Using the current core environmental and human factors produced a series of numerical values, one value representing each factor: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42.

Once these numerical values were determined, the next stage of the Valenzetti equation could be resolved, which would determine the future of humanity. Autistic savants once again had to focus this new series of calculations over a series of years, and the results astounded Alvar and his team.

They predicted the exact number of years and months until humanity extinguished itself through the current environmental and human factors which would lead up to an apocalypse that would absolutely devastate all life on Earth.

Regarding the 'End of the World'?
It was very hard to determine the final elements that would ignite this apocalypse in the near future, but the equation did provide one clue.

First, it appeared that the final catalyst would be entirely environmental, global in nature, and electro-magnetic. The Valenzetti data showed incredible electromagnetic anomalous situations that would occur. But was this environmental catalyst human-driven or natural? The best that the scientists of the time could determine was that there was a great possibility of a failing magnetosphere to cause such devastation.

From this forward point, scientists reverse-engineered the situation. They were able to determine that an anomaly was forming in our magnetosphere around the world which then alerted scientists to the existence of a third magnetosphere ‘auroral oval’ situated in the south-pacific. Analysis showed that it’s very existence had been slowly making the entire magnetosphere unstable to the point of potential collapse under the wrong conditions. This would have disastrous effects on all life, and possibly was the final catalyst for the apocalytic situation determined by the Valenzetti equation.

Alvar was convinced that the source of this anomalous magnetosphere was the mysterious island!

To try and alleviate the catalyst, the solution would have to be one of two possible options:

The third ‘auroral oval’ located in the south pacific (the mysterious island) would need to either be negated / dissipated, or at least contained/controlled to make it more stable.

All current life on Earth would need to be enhanced to be able to live under modified conditions with a failing magnetosphere.

Armed with this information, Alvar realized that this did not mean that salvation was at hand. The Valenzetti equation was absolutely accurate and had flagged the magnetoshere problem as the end-result catalyst event that would occur in the future and end civilization. BUT the real issue that the world faced was with the so-called 'core values' or 'numbers'. It seemed that no amount of attempts to resolve this situation would actually be successful. Fate had already decreed the end of humanity. There was nothing that could be done. The core values showed that.

Or was there?

Possibly by manipulating the environment and finding scientific solutions to the problems of humanity, there would be the possibility of changing the core values which would skew the results and give humanity the chance it needed.

Alvar became more convinced that the only solution that would save humanity existed on the mysterios island. The key to saving the world was right there.

At this time, Alvar initiated a program to study and attempt to resolve the issues with the magnetosphere. The Electromagnetic Research Initiative was born.

Regarding the core value '23'
Throughout the Valenzetti findings, there also seemed to be a focus on the core value '23'. It figured prominently within the findings as they closed in towards the future apocalypse. 23 was the value generated when information relating to a world pandemic were placed into the Valenzetti equation. Initiatives were implemented that would focus on the human factors.

In 1967, Alvar Hanso addressed the UN Security Council regarding the Valenzetti findings and the failing magnetosphere, and to request complete authority to do whatever was required to save the world.

"From the dawn of our species, Man has been blessed with curiosity. Our most precious gift, without exception, is the desire to know more—to look beyond what is accepted as the truth and to imagine what is possible." — Alvar Hanso, address to the United Nations Security Council, 1967.

With the complete understanding and support from the United Nations, Alvar reached out to the greatest minds in the world.

A joint venture between the Hanso Foundation, Paik-Heavy Industries, and the Widmore Corporation and its subsidiaries was founded.

The Widmore family controls the powerhouse Widmore Conglomerate, with its key subsidiaries being Widmore Construction and Widmore Labs. Charles Widmore is the CEO of the corporation (probably the true fictional character behind the metafictional Arthur and Clifford Widmore from the Bad Twin book). Widmore Construction is like ACME in that it has it's hand in everything, even the Pregnancy Test below.

Paik-Heavy Industries (P.H.I.), is a leader in the manufacturing industry. It is solely controlled by an industry magnate, and potential mob boss, Mr. Paik, who is the father of Sun Paik (now married to Jin Kwon).

For this joint venture, the following would apply:

The Hanso Foundation was the controlling aspect that monitors and resolves all aspects of the intended operations.

Paik-Heavy Industries provided all the industrial equipment and raw materials.

Widmore Construction provided all the electronic / technical equipment.

Widmore Labs provides all the chemicals and medicines needed.

Working together an initiative was resolved to repair the situation and ensure a future for the human race.

Gerald and Karen DeGroot, top scientists at the time, devised an initiative to save humanity and the world's failing magnetosphere. They founded and masterminded the D.H.A.R.M.A. Initiative.

DHARMA represented the Department of Heuristics and Research on Material Applications. Alvar chose his acronym carefully, as it also represented the knowledge gained from his predecessors, labeling DHARMA as 'the one true way'.

The DHARMA Initiative (D.I.) consists of employees from Hanso, Widmore and Paik, but a separate overseeing entity would also monitor the progress and ensure compliance. It was made up of entirely Hanso Foundation employees hand-picked by Alvar Hanso himself. They called themselves the Hanso Group (H.G.), and were directly led by Gerald and Karen DeGroot.

Through the use of new technologies, the DHARMA Initiative was able to determine the location of the secret island, and was able to start the process of accessing and studying the secrets contained within.

Dharma Initiative Hanso Group (D.I.H.G.) survey teams were created to map out the island, and determine suitable locations for their testing facilities, and for Valenzett-related research activities.

Various electromagnetic controlling devices were placed on the island by the D.I.H.G. to alter the instability of the third ‘auroral oval’ of the magnetosphere by dampening some of its effects, but not all of them.

During the intial testing of their electromagnetic monitoring equipment, an incident occurred which affected the third magnetosphere ‘auroral oval’ surrounding the island, releasing a powerful discharge of electromagnetic fields. This caused a series of devastating results across the world at the same time. It seems that in its natural state, the electromagnetic effects of the field around the island are very unstable, but a way was determined to unnatural alter the field with their equipment to a much more safer level. A set of protocols were created that required a code to be entered every 108 minutes which would ensure the field stayed at this level.

Alvar Hanso was determined to focus his efforts on enhancing the human condition, making the Island a staging ground for a future utopia where a modified human being could exist under the onslaught of the changes to the environment that would occur.

Charles Widmore had other plans, and was determined to use the Island for his own plans, and definitely not for any utopian society.

Being a high-profile scientist, Benjamin Linus based himself on the island to work on the effects that the magnetic field had on the human brain.

During the early 70’s several underground research laboratory stations were developed for the following purposes:

1. To manipulate environmental and human factors in order to change the core numerical factors
2. To study the effects of the field on life forms.

A radio transmitter was erected on the island that broadcast in an encoded frequency and encryption. If any team was able to change the numerical value of any of the core values, they were to relay this information via the transmitter to alert those who would be monitoring from the outside world.

In 1975 an Orientation video was filmed, hosted by Alvar Hanso. The video was used for the induction of new trainees headed for the island.

Various test subjects were exposed to the anomalous effects within the field under the guise of various psychological test projects, and they were given various tasks to resolve and monitor to determine the different effects that would occur over a certain period of time. Tests were also resolved on animals and aquatic life forms as well. These effects were documented and monitored.

Over time various station workers would realize the level and capacity of the programs and the horror of the situation. Confrontational outbreaks would occur and bring the operations to a grinding halt. It was determined that more radical control parameters needed to be set to ensure continuous and uninterrupted operations. A psychotropic compound was developed and readied to be introduced to the population of station workers that would actively calm any confrontational emotions. What was needed was a way to ensure they would continually ingest the compound. At this same time, a San-Francisco based company called the Apollo Candy Company, which produced a popular chocolate bar called Apollo, was falling into very hard times.

Alvar intervened and saved the business from bankruptcy. Using the new life infused into this company, and through the enhancing of the popularity of the chocolate bar, the Hanso Foundation introduced the psychotropic compound into a series of Apollo bars provided to the active station workers on the island. The end result was a worker population that was obedient, controllable, and easily swayed to take drastic measures with the test subjects if needed. It was very common to hear "We are doing this for the good of humanity. We are the good guys."

In 1980, as part of a psychological research project, a phony orientation video was created for the research subjects located in the Swan station, and the Pearl station.

Over the years of research on the island, the son of Alvar determined the following:

The field altered the DNA structures of any lifeforms that exist within it.

The field altered the synaptic connections within the brain, thereby altering the mental state of anyone who exists within it.

The field acted as a sort of memory battery that can contain memories and experiences.

Humans cannot exist for extended periods within the field as they eventually fall prey to unknown alterations of the brain. The end result is usually insanity, dangerous destructive tendencies and suicide.

He was able to determine that some humans have an active switch in their junk DNA that is very uncommon, and allows them to exist within the field for extended periods of time. Everyone else would need to use a genetically created viral treatment that needed to be injected directly into the bloodstream. The viral agent would slow down the process of DNA/mental corruption only as long as the injections were taken every eight days. No side-effects warranted discontinuing use of the viral agent.

On December 7th, 1981 a Delegation of Hanso Group (H.G.) inspectors arrived on the island to inspect the stations, and the projects being resolved. This group was headed by Alvar himself.

In 1984, Alvar Hanso realized that the viral agent that was being injected into the D.I.H.G. team was not just slowing the process of DNA/mental corruption, but had actually mutated under the electromagnetic conditions on the island. The end result was that the entire D.I.H.G. was compromised, and had actually become physically stronger, more able to absorb the electromagnetic effects from the island, but they also became mentally more unstable than if they didn’t take the injections. This mental instability was far worse than anything ever documented and seemed to be irreversible.

This is seen by the words scribbled on the blast door, Aegrescit medendo, which translated means “the disease worsens with the treatment” or “the remedy makes the disease worse” or “he becomes ill by being cured”.

Immediately upon being advised of this by Alvar Hanso, Charles Widmore declared an emergency and sent in a team of military soldiers to eradicate the hostiles (the current D.I.H.G. group residing on the island). Alvar Hanso left the island at this time. A destructive situation occurred with the slaughter of many of the original D.I.H.G. members. Only a handful of them survived and escaped, hiding in the deepness of the island. Specifically, they were the son of Alvar Hanso (we know him as the fake Henry Gale), Miss Clue, the man nicknamed as Zeke, and another male, as yet unnamed.

In 1985 this small group of D.I.H.G. survivors made an attempt to take back the research stations from the new group of Dharma Initiative soldiers, causing the first AH/MDG incident to occur.

After the incident, the D.I.H.G. decided that an island-wide network was needed to ensure accurate communications between the separate stations on the island. The DHARMATEL servers, hubs, cabling and infrastructure were placed throughout the island, with a direct shore-to-shore massive conduit cable running along the ocean from the mainland. To ensure secrecy, the cable was coated and layered so as to be completely invisible under the ocean.

Various electromagnetic controlling devices were placed on the island by the D.I.H.G. to alter the instability of the third ‘auroral oval’ of the magnetosphere by dampening some of its effects, but not all of them.

Periodic deliveries of needed supplies and cartridges of the viral agent are dropped every 6 – 8 months, but the electromagnetic effects of the island needed to be altered / dampened to allow the aerial deliveries. To this end an automated shutdown system was put into place, that performed a complete diminishing of all signatures on the island prior to reducing the islands natural field. This was a security precaution to ensure that the island was not detected in this down-time mode during the supply drop.

From 1985, Alvar Hanso stayed away from the island so as not to be affected by the field effects. He also did not want to introduce the mutated viral agent into his system.

In 1987 Kelvin Joe Inman was working for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) as a representative for the U.S. Military in Kuwait.

During this time Kelvin was working under the direct authority of Sergeant Major Sam Austen (Kate’s non-biological father).

During the late 80’s and early 90’s a series of struggles for power occurred between the DHARMA soldiers and D.I.H.G. survivors.

1990's
David Widmore, the son of Charles Widmore, was an influential millionaire who was very powerful.
Penelope Widmore, the daughter of Charles Widmore, was a rich heiress, a corporate princess.

Elizabeth (Libby) Hanso was an active member of the Hanso Foundation, and was also married to David Widmore, the son of Charles Widmore (CEO of the Widmore Companies), and hence became Elizabeth Widmore.

Mr.Paik of P.H.I. Industries had a daughter Sun Paik, who eventually married Jin Kwon.

1991
The first Gulf War ‘Operation Desert Storm’ occurred. Sayid Jarrah is captured by the U.S. Military in Kuwait and meets Kelvin Joe Inman and Sam Austen. During this time he is taught the art of torture by applying this skill on his former commanding officer Tariq. Sayid is abandoned in the Kuwait desert by the U.S. Military.

At the end of the Desert Storm campaign, Kelvin Joe Inman left his undercover service in the DIA, joining the DHARMA Initiative, working directly with Sam Austen.

1991 to 1995
Two military DHARMA soldiers arrive on the island to continue running the station facilities. They are Kelvin Joe Inman, and Sam Radzinsky (Sam Toomey from the Mental Institute).

2000 AD

David Widmore purchased a sailing yacht, but supposedly became ill and died. I propose that his death was faked so as to officially remove him from the real world, allowing him to place himself on the mystical island as a representative from the Widmore family.

On April 8th a system-wide failure of the DHARMATEL intranet occurred. It was repaired with substantial cost and loss of life.

Charles Widmore had personal reasons to dispose of Desmond Hume, to keep him away from his daughter Penelope. To this end, Widmore Construction ran the 'Widmore's Sailing Championship Race', and Charles instructed Elizabeth (Libby) Widmore to find and meet with Desmond to provide him with the needed sailing ship Elizabeth.

Sarah (Shepherd) was involved in a car accident with the father of Shannon Rutherford. Jack decided to operate on her instead of Shannon’s father, so Shannon’s father ultimately died because of this decision. Jack performed the operation but had little hope that he had fixed her. Jack visited a stadium to body train in the aisles, and interacted with Desmond. Jack’s father Christian Shepherd was a senior member of the Life Extension Project of the Hanso Foundation.

During his visit to the stadium, Christian Shepherd secretly had a group of doctors from the LEP visit Sarah and perform their miracles on her. Jack returned to discover the next morning that she was miraculously repaired!

Over the next eight months, Desmond trained for the championship race. Unbeknownst to Desmond, the Elizabeth was actually rigged to ensure that he would travel off-course from the rest of the race course and pass through into the domain of the mystical island via a specific secret route that would gain him access. After passing through the same type of anomalous storm that the Black Rock passed through, he crashed and was saved by Kelvin Joe Inman.

2001 AD

On August 15th a system-wide failure of the DHARMATEL intranet occurred.

2000 to 2003 AD

During this time frame Desmond was trapped on the island with Kelvin Joe Inman, pushing the button. Penelope was somehow aware that her father had his hands in the disappearance of Desmond, and therefore she uses her ‘vast monetary resources' to contract a certain Henry Gale (the original) to try and find the mystery island via a Widmore Labs balloon.

Henry Gale makes it to the island but does not survive long.

2003 AD

On January 6th, a system-wide failure of the DHARMATEL intranet occurred. The intranet was shutdown and eventually abandoned as a feasible system. Instead it was determined that their older system that was in place during the original 1980’s seemed to work to sustain the electromagnetic equipment, so these computer systems were used.

2004 AD

A system failure occured on September 22, 2004, when Desmond apparently failed to enter the number sequence prior to the timing counter reacing zero.

Also, on September 22nd, Oceanic Flight 815 crashes on the island. The possible electromagnetic discharge might have caused the crash of Oceanic Flight 815.

Umm... I still like the thought that it's just fantasy for fantasy's sake...

Well the creators of the show have done an awful lot of research so it's rooted in a lot of things, it is a great fantasy but there is another level to it of symbolism and everything, same as everything with a second layer though, the first (the storyline) has to be good enough to keep people interested! That said, I'm not entirely convinced by this theory either, I haven't read one yet that I think explains it all!
