Autobiographies |
|
Anyone else get fed up with the amount of 20-something pop stars/footballers/general pathetic celebrities releasing autobiographies all the time?
I'm a 20-something myself but I have a feeling my life has been a hell of a lot more interesting than a lot of them, even if I haven't achieved the great dizzy heights of fame! All the same, I'd leave it a few years to write my autobiog!
Most of them don't really seem to have anything to say, they're ghostwritten and a lot of the time don't really tell us anything we don't already know from the newspapers anyway.
If a sports person retires and they want to write about that part of their life fair enough, same if a band breaks up and a member wants their side of the story known, but someone like David Beckham releasing two or three books before he's 35 just seems wasteful annoying and pathetic to me. It's just a way for the publishers to make big money by having a famous person on the cover.
Anyway, rant over (for now) anyone have an opinion on this?

Yep I have an opinion (surprise surprise!!) I agree, I think people like Big-Brother non entities wailing about how their life meant nothing until they got a 4 page spread in Hello magazine is just insulting to people who actually read books.
Especially as they generally have a team of ghost writers behind them so probably only have to dictate the bare-bones of their fascinating life story before some infinately more talented but not credited writer tries to make it into something vaguely interesting.
But there are also some damn good autobiographies out there - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is an amazing book (by Jean Dominique Bauby) and the guy that wrote it actually had a huge story to tell.

Oh yeah, I agree there are some amazing autobiogs out there(haven't read the one you mentioned but I'll keep an eye out for it) - i think it takes away from them to have them placed beside the drivel though as modern bookshops categorise them all the same.

I've never read an autobiography, but i agree that some are just total rubbish and should never be published in the first place
